Chapter 17: Engagement party 3

I couldn't help but cry a bit because of the embarrassment I experienced in front of all those people. I wasn't sad that I didn't get engaged but angry because he couldn't show me any face by showing up or sending anyone to deliver the message.

'Honey, it's okay. Stop crying okay' said my mum

I tried to listen to her but I just couldn't stop the tears from falling.

'Don't listen to them my child. The Cromwells probably had something important to do today so they couldn't make it. It was probably an emergency dear'

'They should have tried to send someone to inform us about it. This just shows how low their respect for me is. That's the same family I'm going to get married into. They will probably teach me like an irrelevant person in the family mum'

'No dear it's okay. They probably had an emergency as I said before. We just need to give them time. I'm sure they will send us a message'

I ended up sleeping on my mother's lap....

Mrs Collins ( Elena) ended up going to meet Anna later in the night when Clare fell asleep.

'Mother, have you gotten any feedback from the Cromwells'

'Why are you disturbing me woman? Since you want to know so bad then I will let you in on the gist. The heir of the Cromwells forgot that his engagement was to hold today and went on a business trip' replied Anna

'That's the kind of man you want my daughter to get married to. A man who even forgot about his engagement like it isn't something important. Mother if anything happens to my daughter in that household then I will hold you accountable for it'

'You can do absolutely nothing to me Elena. You and I know that you can't do anything about it. Do you want me to give out my precious granddaughter to a man like him. Don't you dare forget that you owe this family everything. It's because of me that you have a roof over your head and your daughter has a name'

Mrs Collins walked away helplessly as she knew that all Anna said was correct.

Clare quickly ran back to her room before her mum came out of the room.
