Chapter 16: Engagement party 2

Everything was already in place and all the guests had already arrived as we all awaited the arrival of the Cromwells.The engagement was set to begin at 3pm but it was already 5pm and the Cromwells were no where to be found. My grandma already freaking out as she thought that the Cromwells changed their minds.

'Madam Collins, where is the groom's family' asked one of my grandma's nasty friends with a grin on her face

'They are on their way Mrs Donna' replied my grandma with a look of uncertainty

' You all can feel free to eat and drink, the Cromwells will be here soon. They are just running a bit late.

My grandma looked panicked as she frantically kept calling them but got no reply.

Mathew was sent to their place to find out what was actually wrong but came back with news that the family wasn't at home. The guards told him that the Cromwells had travelled some days back.

My grandma looked upset as she had to announce the news to everyone present. She looked ashamed as she went up to the stage to rely the news to her special guests.

'I'm sorry everyone but the engagement has been cancelled. The Cromwells had an emergency so they couldn't make it here but you can all feel free to enjoy yourselves'

Many of the guests looked disappointed while some of my grandma's shrewd friends looked elated. Some started gossiping and looking at me weirdly.

'Poor child, her groom-to-be couldn't even show her some face by coming or sending someone to deliver the message' said one elderly lady to a younger one

'He doesn't seem to have respect for her but who would have respect for an illegitimate child of the Collins. I heard that the man she's to marry is ugly so they had to use her as a replacement for Ava' replied the younger lady in an obviously loud tone.

Some of the guests who heard it started laughing. I just couldn't bare to stay there so I ran back to my room to clear my head. My mum shortly followed after me.
