Her eyes opened to a white brightness; a blurred iridescent vision that hurt not only her dilated pupils but shot excruciating pain through her already aching head. She snapped them shut with a sharp intake of breath that triggered an intense pain through her chest. The steady beep of a machine with a pounding resonance echoed in her ears. Nausea welled in her stomach, and the taste of bile burned her throat.
