Chapter 18 – Confession Almost Slips

749 Words
The summer heat lingered late into the evening, heavy and golden as the sun bled into streaks of pink over the rooftops. Lily found herself walking side by side with Ethan after their shift, the world hushed except for the faint chirp of crickets. She clutched her bag a little tighter, acutely aware of the warmth radiating from his arm beside hers. They didn’t usually walk this way — the route was longer, winding past the quiet park near the ice cream parlor — but tonight, neither of them seemed eager to say goodbye. “So,” Ethan said after a stretch of silence, his tone teasing, “do you always look like you’re deep in thought? Or is this your ‘end-of-shift’ face?” Lily shot him a glance, cheeks warming. “Maybe I’m thinking about how many sprinkles I spilled today. Or maybe I’m plotting world domination. You’ll never know.” He chuckled, the sound low and easy. “If it involves ice cream, I’d probably sign up for it.” The air between them felt lighter than it should have, filled with an energy that buzzed quietly, like static before a storm. They passed beneath the tall oak trees at the park’s edge, and the shadows made everything feel more intimate, more secret. Lily’s heart drummed hard in her chest. She wanted to say something, anything that could untangle the knots inside her — how being around him made her laugh in ways no one else did, how she kept replaying every tiny moment they shared. But the words sat heavy on her tongue. Instead, she asked, softly, “Do you ever wonder if… if this summer is going to change things?” Ethan slowed his steps, turning his head toward her. The fading light caught in his eyes, and for a moment, she thought she saw something flicker there — vulnerability, maybe, or hesitation. “All the time,” he admitted, voice barely above a whisper. Her breath caught. She hadn’t expected him to be so honest. “Like… change in a good way?” she pressed. He tilted his head, smirking in that effortless, teasing way, but his words didn’t match the lightness of his expression. “Depends on what kind of change you’re hoping for.” Lily’s chest squeezed. This was it — the moment, the opening. Her pulse roared in her ears. She could confess right now, spill everything she’d scribbled in her journal late at night, all the feelings she wasn’t sure she should have. But when she opened her mouth, her voice faltered. “I think…” Her words tangled. She swallowed, looking down at her sneakers scuffing the sidewalk. “I think change isn’t always bad. Sometimes it’s… the best thing.” Silence stretched, thick with all the unsaid things between them. Ethan’s gaze lingered on her, his expression unreadable. Then he reached out suddenly, brushing his fingers against her wrist as if to steady her. The touch was feather-light, but it sent shivers racing up her arm. “Lily…” he began, his voice rougher now, stripped of its teasing edge. Her heart skipped. Say it. Please say it. But before he could, headlights cut through the shadows, and a car slowed as it passed them on the street. The spell broke. Ethan stepped back just slightly, running a hand through his hair in that nervous habit of his. “Anyway,” he said, clearing his throat. “We should probably get you home before it gets too dark.” Her chest ached at the loss of whatever that almost-confession had been. But she forced a smile, tucking her hair behind her ear. “Right. Home.” They walked the rest of the way in near-silence, each lost in their thoughts. Every time their shoulders brushed, Lily’s heart leapt. She wanted to reach for his hand, to close the distance, but she didn’t. Not yet. When they finally reached her front gate, Ethan lingered. His eyes met hers again, and there it was — that same unspoken weight, that same hesitation. “Goodnight, Lily,” he murmured. Her throat tightened. She nodded, managing a small smile. “Goodnight, Ethan.” He waited until she slipped inside before turning to go. Lily leaned against the door once it shut, her pulse racing. She hadn’t said the words. Neither had he. But tonight, they’d both come so close. And she knew — soon — one of them wouldn’t hold back.
