I woke up that morning feeling not quite like myself. Probably because I'm still settling into New York City after a long time or maybe it was something I ate the previous night.
It had been two weeks since Dad presented me with the offer to work at Virelli House with the condition that I go back to medical school. It was quite tempting but I told myself that I would never let my Dad control my life again. I wasn't interested in medicine, so why would I want to go back just to stroke my Dad's ego? I wasn't ready to do that.
I reached for the bedside drawer and pulled out the envelope, the necklace from the mystery guy was also lying there. I stared at it for a while. “You're obviously not coming back for it now.” I whispered to myself and put on the necklace. I picked up the envelope and kept staring at it, weighing the options I had with me.
Starting from the ground up with nothing was going to be really tough but it would be worth it in the end and the glory would be all mine, but what if it doesn't end up working out? Taking my Dad's offer was a surefire way to success but I would be giving him control over my life and Lord knows I really don't want to see that man gloating over me.
I went to sit at the machine, I still couldn't get over how sophisticated it was and how thoughtful Davina had been to set up a room specially for me. I was about to start working on some designs when suddenly I felt a discomfort in my stomach and immediately ran to the bathroom to throw up. I started feeling somewhat sick.
“Was it something I ate?” I whispered to myself.
A knock came at the door. It was Davina.
“Daisy, are you doing okay?”
“Yes, I am.” I opened the door and she walked inside the room.
“I kinda heard a noise, sounded like you were throwing up.” She gave me a serious look of concern. “You don't look okay. I'm a doctor, you can't lie to me about these things.”
“I just feel a little sick, it's nothing serious. I'll be fine.” I said to her with a smile on my face.
She placed a hand on my forehead. “You're warm.”
She took a long serious look at my face again. “You look kinda pale this morning.”
I smiled slightly. “I'll be fine, doctor. I just need to rest a little bit, that's all.” I said, “I guess the excessive partying is already taking a toll.”
She laughed subtly. “I guess you're not used to New York yet.”
“Yeah, I guess.” I chuckled. “Aren't you running late for work?”
“You're more important. You live under my roof now, so I have to take care of you.” She said, stroking my hair.
Davina's eyes drifted briefly towards the bedside drawer and she spotted the envelope lying there. “You still haven't decided if you're going to accept Dad's offer?”
I took a deep loud breath. “It's tempting but the last thing I wanna do is become a pawn in Dad's games.” I sighed. “I'm still thinking about it though.”
“Well, I will support whatever you decide. I'm always in your corner and I've always got your back. Don't forget that.” She smiled and hugged me.
“I know that. Thank you Davina.”
“But, if you do decide that you wanna do this on your own… you're gonna have to get a job.” She teased. “Dreams are not cheap and I can't coddle you forever, my baby sis.” She patted me on my cheeks and laughed subtly.
I sighed loudly. “Oh… I know that.”
Davina looked at her wristwatch. “Oh my, look at the time. I am late for work. I gotta run, see you later, Daisy.”
“Alright doctor.” I said softly.
She stopped at the door and looked at me for a moment. “Ouuuu, nice necklace. Bye, make sure you eat, there's a lot of food in the fridge, you just have to cook it.” She laughed as she left.
“Bye, Davina.” I said, closing the door to my room.
I threw myself on the bed, I wasn't really feeling like doing anything today. I kept rubbing the necklace around my neck. “Please let it not be what I'm thinking.” I whispered to myself.
I got up and went back to the machine but my mind couldn't focus. I picked up my phone out of curiosity to check my period tracker. “It should be here by now.” I thought to myself. I opened the app and gasped immediately.
“Oh my, I'm late?” I shouted before I could stop myself.
“I hope this isn't what I'm thinking.” I said to myself.
I went to the kitchen to prepare a cup of coffee for myself but as soon as I took a sip, I felt nauseous and immediately ran to the bathroom to throw up again. I started having extreme thoughts and hoped seriously that it wouldn't be what I was thinking.
I had a shower and went to a nearby convenience store to get a pregnancy test kit. I felt uneasy as I approached the counter to pay for the test kit.
I kept tapping on the counter and tapping my feet rapidly on the floor. I noticed the store attendant staring at me and I suddenly got agitated.
“What? You've never seen a lady buy a pregnancy test before?” I lashed out.
She smiled and placed her hand on my shaky hand on the counter. “Just relax, it's normal to feel nervous but it's a beautiful thing.”
That calmed me down for a moment.
“I'm sorry for lashing out.” I chuckled lightly.
As soon as I got back home, I opened the kit quickly and ran to the bathroom to use it. Those five minutes felt like ages. I kept pacing around my room as I waited eagerly for the test results. I kept rubbing my fingers on the necklace.
“Who are you MW and what have you done to me?” I whispered to myself.
As soon as the results were ready, I slowly picked up the test. I was too nervous to check because part of me already knew what it would say but I hoped that I was wrong.
I looked at the test and the results came out as positive. My hands trembled as I stared at the test result, I prayed that it was a dream and I would wake up soon but this was really happening. I fell to the ground, a stream of tears poured out of my eyes as I began to cry uncontrollably.
“I'm pregnant for a man who I don't even know his name.” I cried out.
I was lost, I had no idea how I was going to raise this child and still chase my dream of becoming a fashion designer. I was beginning to have intrusive thoughts. I looked at my reflection in the mirror and placed my hand on
my belly wondering what I was going to do about this new creature growing inside me.
