Chapter 3: Daisy

I was hungover from drinking way too much last night, I could barely stand up. I staggered to the bathroom for a shower. When I was done and went back to the bedroom, I noticed something on the floor by the bed. A golden necklace, it had an initial engraved in it, “M.W”. It must have belonged to him, I had no way of finding him or contacting him. We never even exchanged names, it's crazy to think I had s*x with a man and don't even know his name. I reached for my bedside drawer to see the notice again. EVICTION NOTICE This is to inform you that you have 2 days to exit this house due to your excessive outstanding rent payments. I guess I'll be having to move out of this apartment today if I don't want to get thrown out forcefully and face another embarrassment. Maybe dropping out of college to pursue fashion wasn't really the best choice. At least in college, my parents supported me with a monthly allowance and I had a dorm to sleep in. Now, I work at a silly bar and can't even afford to pay rent for a tiny apartment. “Oh my God! What am I gonna do?” I whispered, rubbing my palms on my face and letting out a long and loud sigh. I picked up my phone and started scrolling through the contact list, hoping there would be somebody I could call for help. I was already desperate. That was when I saw it… “Davina” , my older sister's number. I hadn't called her in a while, I hadn't called anyone in my family since I dropped out of school against my parents wishes. My dad had wanted me to study medicine and become a doctor like he was. He was never in support of me practicing fashion. He called me delusional. “We spend so much money on your education, to give you a future and you wanna throw it away to become a lowlife tailor?” He would say. The last thing I wanted to do was to prove him right. Davina was the one person who always had my back but I hadn't spoken to her ever since I ran away from home. I desperately needed her help and she was the only one I could ask for help. I had no idea how to talk to her after so long, I felt kinda guilty for not reaching out for so long. I stared long and hard at my phone, knowing exactly what I needed to do and it kinda made me anxious. I suddenly tapped on ‘call’ and as it rang, my heart paced. I was wondering what I would say if she eventually picked up and she did. “I didn't know you still had a phone.” Davina said sarcastically over the phone. “Hehe… I've been meaning to call, I'm so sorry I didn't reach out sooner.” I said nervously. “You've been meaning to call for the past two years?” She asked. “Sounds like you totally forgot about me, Daisy.” “Things have been tough, Davina.” I replied. I didn't really know how to rightly explain myself. “So tough that you forgot the one person who constantly stuck her neck out for you when Mom and Dad were always on your case?” She sounded disappointed and I knew her grievances were justified. “I called, I texted. You couldn't deem it fit to even give me a response? I was worried, Daisy. I thought something happened to you.” I had been so caught up with trying to get into Veritas that I had literally abandoned my sister. I saw the texts and the calls and I chose to ignore them with the excuse that I was doing something important. “I'm sorry. I have no excuse.” I said softly. “It's actually nice to hear from you.” “Yeah, you too. How have you been?” “I've been getting by. Missing my little sister.” She chuckled lightly. “I've missed you too.” “How about you? How have you been? I'm sure you're killing it in the fashion world already.” “Yeah… you can put it that way.” I giggled nervously. “Okay, I know that tone. What's going on? Spill.” I sighed. “Honestly, I've been a mess.” “How do you mean?” “Things haven't been going well since I moved to LA. Living on my own hasn't been as easy as I thought it would be.” I started sobbing. “What exactly is going on, Daisy?” Her tone shifted to that of concern. “I haven't been able to pay rent and I've been kicked out of my house. I need a place to stay. I'm desperate, Davina.” I couldn't hold back the crying this time. “Oh… so you didn't call to check up on me. You called because you needed my help.” Beep! The phone sounded. Davina hung up. “Davina! Davina!” No answer. I guess I couldn't blame her. I ignored her for the past two years and only called when I needed her help, that was selfish. My phone beeped. A notification. It was a text from Davina. ‘Fine, you can come live with me in New York. It was actually nice to finally hear from you. Good thing you finally realized that you couldn't live without your big sister lol. And you don't really expect me to abandon you and leave you homeless, do you? <3’ I let out a huge sigh of relief. I had been wondering what I would have done after the eviction time elapsed. I tossed my phone on the bed and fell back on the bed. I woke up the following morning to pack my things for New York. I looked at the bedside drawer and saw the necklace from the mystery guy. I instinctively packed it with my luggage and off to New York I went. This didn't mean that I was done with chasing my fashion dreams, I was still going to keep at it, but I finally r ealized that I didn't necessarily need Veritas to fully realize my dream.
