We returned to the camp, and while Fabricio and Ulisses dug a pair of graves in the soft ground, the rest of us righted the destruction of the base camp and tried to salvage what we could. It wasn’t much. Dr. Avila was upset not only by the loss of his men but by the damage done to so much of the equipment.
“This doesn’t make any sense,” I muttered. “Aemiliano’s obviously been dead for a while, but Pablo—”
“He was a long time dying,” Captain da Rosa said
My gaze shot up to his. “Do you mean…”
“Yes.”
Oh, hell. Before I could question the captain further, Sam’s voice shattered the stillness of the evening.
“I’m not spending the night here.” His tone left no doubt he meant what he said. “I don’t care how f*****g safe you think it is, I’m not.”
