Chapter 16
Dr. Avila didn’t answer his private line. A man with a liquid Spanish accent did.
“Sí?”
I cleared my throat. “This is David Knight. I’m calling for Dr. Avila.”
“David Knight? Dr. David Knight? My Carlos, he is looking forward to working with you.”
“It will be nice to work with him. Is he there? I have something I’d like to discuss with him.”
“Regrettably, no. He’s at the institute’s facility on Pesadelo Bay.”
“I thought he was in Manaus.” Hadn’t Father known? In spite of what he’d said, was he throwing up a roadblock?
“Carlos has been there for some days. He is fascinated by this find.”
“What exactly is it?”
“That I cannot say. Is there anything else I may help you with?”
“Do you have a phone number for the facility? I’ll call to let him know I should be flying down,
