Chapter 15

827 Words
Shayera's heart plummeted as she heard Lord Lionel Cain's harsh declaration, "Shayera must die." The words echoed through the grand hall, cutting through the air like a cold blade. She stood frozen in the doorway, her mind struggling to process the gravity of what she had just heard. The warmth and passion she had shared with Daedalus just moments ago seemed like a distant dream, now overshadowed by the chilling reality of the situation. Daedalus, standing before Lord Lionel, looked as if the world had just collapsed around him. His eyes were wild with disbelief and fury. "You can't do this," he protested, his voice trembling with emotion. "She's my mate! You can't just—" Lionel interrupted, his voice stern and unyielding. "You know the laws, Daedalus. The King decreed this union between you and Rosa long ago. It was meant to solidify alliances, to bring peace to the realm. But now, with Rosa missing and you entangled with Shayera, everything is at risk. If word of this bond between you two spreads, it could mean war. The King will not tolerate any deviation from his plans." Shayera's breath hitched as she realized the full weight of the situation. The bond she shared with Daedalus was supposed to be sacred, a connection beyond the reach of any law or decree. But now, it seemed that even this powerful bond was not enough to protect them from the cruel realities of political maneuvering and ancient obligations. Maximus, who had been standing beside Shayera, stepped forward, his youthful face pale with fear. "Father, please," he pleaded. "There must be another way. Shayera didn't ask for this. None of us did. We can't just... kill her." Lionel's gaze softened slightly as he looked at his son, but his resolve remained firm. "Maximus, you are too young to understand the full consequences of defying the King's orders. This is not just about our family—it's about the stability of the entire kingdom. If Rosa isn't found, and if Daedalus refuses to fulfill his duty, the repercussions will be catastrophic." Shayera's mind raced as she stood there, trying to comprehend her options. She could run, but where would she go? There was no escaping the King's reach. She could fight, but against whom? Against the laws that governed their world? Against the love she felt for Daedalus? As if sensing her turmoil, Daedalus turned to face her, his eyes filled with desperation and love. "Shayera, I swear to you, I will find a way out of this. I won't let them hurt you. I will speak to my father, to the King if I have to—" But before he could finish, Lionel raised a hand, silencing him. "Daedalus, enough. This isn't just about you or your feelings. It's about duty, responsibility, and the greater good. You will marry Rosa when she is found, and Shayera will be dealt with accordingly." Shayera's heart ached as she looked at Daedalus, seeing the pain and helplessness in his eyes. She wanted to tell him that everything would be okay, that they would find a way to be together, but the words caught in her throat. The reality was far too grim, and any false hope would only make things worse. Taking a deep breath, she stepped forward, her voice steady despite the fear clawing at her insides. "Lord Lionel," she began, her eyes locking onto his, "I understand the position you're in, and I don't wish to bring harm to your family or your plans. But you must understand that the bond between Daedalus and me is not something that can be easily broken. We didn't choose this, but now that it exists, it cannot simply be erased." Lionel's eyes narrowed, and for a moment, there was silence. Then, he spoke, his voice cold and resolute. "The bond may not be easily broken, but it can be severed. If you truly care for Daedalus, Shayera, you will accept what must be done for the sake of the kingdom. The King's will is absolute." The room seemed to close in around Shayera as she realized that Lionel's words were final. There was no escaping the fate that had been decreed for her. The love she shared with Daedalus, as powerful as it was, could not stand against the forces that sought to tear them apart. But as she stood there, surrounded by the weight of duty and destiny, a spark of defiance ignited within her. She had come too far, endured too much, to simply accept this as the end. She would fight, not just for herself, but for the love that had brought her and Daedalus together. Whatever the cost, whatever the outcome, she would not go quietly. As she met Daedalus's gaze, she saw the same determination reflected in his eyes. Together, they would face whatever came next. And somehow, they would find a way to survive this—together.
