"My Lord," said Shayera, her voice trembling as she brought Lionel's attention back to the present. Lionel turned his gaze to the young girl standing before him, her eyes filled with fear and uncertainty. She was a mere pawn in a game far larger than she could have ever imagined, thrust into a chaotic situation against her will. Lionel sighed heavily, the weight of his decisions pressing down on him. He saw in Shayera a girl who had been dragged into a dangerous web of politics and forbidden love, all for circumstances beyond her control.
"Shayera, my dear," Lionel began, his voice softer now, though still laced with authority. "I understand that these circumstances are far from ideal for any of us. But the King's decision was made years ago, and only the King can overturn this mess now. If it were just a case of my daughter being missing without the complication of the mate bond, perhaps we could spin a different story. We could claim that a slave girl kidnapped Rosa for ransom and, once she was returned, everything could continue as planned. As far as I am aware, only the people in this household know of the mate bond. So, it could be possible to have Rosa returned, proceed with the planned wedding, and thus spare your life."
Lionel's eyes narrowed as he pointed a stern finger at Daedalus and Shayera. "But hear me well, Shayera, there will be no closeness between you two. This is not up for negotiation." The command was clear and unforgiving. Shayera, understanding the gravity of the situation, let her hand slip from Daedalus' arm and took a hesitant step away from him. Lionel acknowledged her compliance with a nod, satisfied that she understood her place.
"You will aid our family in finding Rosa," Lionel continued, his voice taking on a tone of grim resolve. "And you will ensure that Daedalus and Rosa's marriage proceeds as planned. Shayera, this is the only way you will be allowed to live. If you and your mate can suppress these feelings—if you can abide by the rules and laws dictated by his father—then perhaps we can avoid a greater disaster."
Lionel turned his gaze to Daedalus, his expression hardening. "Daedalus, you are a key player in this. If you choose to defy your father's ruling, it could mean war between our families. Only your father has the authority to alter a decision like this. Not even your brother could intervene at this stage. But make no mistake, if any harm comes to my Rosa, I will not be this lenient again."
Tears welled up in Shayera's eyes, spilling down her cheeks as she spoke, her voice thick with emotion. "Please, my lord, allow me to help you find her."
Lionel's stern expression softened slightly as he looked down at her. "Shayera," he said, his tone gentler, "yes, you have my permission to aid in the search." But his face quickly hardened again as he continued, "However, as much as it pains me to say this, you will no longer be welcome in this household as a tutor for Maximus or a friend for Rosa. Once Rosa is returned and she and Daedalus are married, I will make arrangements for you to be sent far away. You will live comfortably and want for nothing, but it is best that you are no longer in the vicinity. This way, you will not tempt Daedalus to stray, nor will Rosa be plagued by jealousy over what she cannot have."
Daedalus tried to protest, his voice rising in desperation. "You can't do that, Lionel—"
But Lionel raised a hand to silence him. "You know better than to stop me at this stage," he said firmly. "This is the only solution I can see. If you ask for Shayera to stay, and the King learns of this, we will have no choice but to execute her. This is the only way for her to live. Accept it now, Daedalus. Unless your father changes his mind, there is no other option for you."
Daedalus' shoulders slumped in defeat, the reality of the situation settling heavily on him. The thought of losing Shayera, of having her torn from his life, was unbearable, yet the alternative was even worse. He knew Lionel was right—there was no other choice if he wanted to protect her. The room was silent, the weight of the decisions made and the futures altered hanging heavily in the air. Shayera stood still, tears streaming down her face, knowing that her life would never be the same again.
Daedalus clenched his fists, a mix of anger and sorrow swirling within him. He wanted to fight, to defy the laws that bound him, but he knew it would only lead to more pain, more loss. As Lionel turned to leave, Daedalus could only stand there, feeling utterly powerless, his heart breaking for the woman he loved but could never truly have.
