Episode 5 – The Mask Slips
Emma hadn’t expected to see him like this.
She had walked into the Blackwood estate with her guard raised, bracing herself for Adrian’s usual sharp tongue and commanding presence. But what she found instead stopped her at the doorway: Adrian Blackwood , the cold, intimidating lord who always seemed carved out of marble, was on the carpeted floor of the drawing room, letting a little girl braid his dark hair with clumsy fingers.
His little sister—no older than eight—was laughing, her silvery giggles echoing across the grand room. Adrian sat still, letting her tiny hands tug at his hair, though his jaw clenched in concentration as if he were enduring a serious ordeal.
Emma froze.
This wasn’t the Adrian she knew.
He looked… human.
For a long moment, she simply watched, forgetting to breathe. The ruthless businessman she clashed with day after day had vanished. In his place was an older brother who listened patiently to his sister’s endless chatter, who allowed her to crown him with crooked ribbons and uneven braids, who actually smiled—softly, faintly, but enough to steal Emma’s breath.
It was as though she had peeled back a mask she never knew he wore.
Adrian caught sight of her then.
His smile vanished instantly. The mask slammed back into place.
“Emma,” he said, his voice clipped, almost scolding, as if she had intruded on something forbidden. He gently removed his sister’s hands from his hair and stood, towering once more, every inch the imposing figure she had come to know.
His little sister frowned. “But Adrian—”
“Go on, Lila,” Adrian said firmly but not unkindly. “Nanny’s waiting.”
The girl hesitated, glanced between them, then scampered off reluctantly, leaving the ribbons still dangling from his hair.
Emma couldn’t help it—her lips curved into a smile. “You’re actually… human.”
Adrian’s eyes darkened. He tugged the ribbons from his hair with brisk movements, his expression shuttering. “You weren’t meant to see that.”
“See what?” Emma asked, tilting her head, her tone teasing despite the sudden heaviness in the air. “That you have a heart?”
He flinched.
Emma regretted the words the moment they slipped out. She had only meant to ease the sudden tension, but the look on his face—raw, vulnerable, almost wounded—made her chest ache.
“Don’t,” he said, his voice rough.
“Don’t what?” she whispered.
“Don’t look at me like that.”
His intensity sent a shiver racing through her. She wanted to ask why not? She wanted to tell him that this side of him—this fragile, unguarded warmth—made him real. Made him less of the untouchable lord and more of a man.
But before she could speak, Adrian turned away sharply.
“You should go,” he said, his tone suddenly icy.
Emma blinked. “Go? But—”
“Now, Emma.”
The dismissal was harsh.
Something in her chest cracked, sharp and cold.
She gathered her things with trembling fingers, fighting the sting behind her eyes. She had glimpsed something precious, something she wasn’t meant to see, and he had slammed the door shut.
But as she walked out of the Blackwood estate, the image of Adrian kneeling on the carpet, smiling at his sister, refused to leave her mind.
Beneath the armor, he was capable of tenderness. And that truth lodged itself deep in her heart, no matter how much he tried to bury it.

Later that Night
Emma lay in bed staring at the ceiling. Sleep refused to come.
Every time she closed her eyes, she saw him again—Adrian with ribbons in his hair, Adrian listening with infinite patience, Adrian smiling softly as his sister laughed.
It unsettled her more than she wanted to admit.
She had built him up in her mind as a tyrant, a cold-hearted lord who toyed with her life for reasons she couldn’t quite understand. And yet, in that fleeting moment, she had seen a different man entirely.
Which one was real?
The question burned in her chest.
Her heart whispered one answer. Her pride whispered another.
And between the two, Emma lay restless, her thoughts tangled like Lila’s ribbons.

Meanwhile, in Adrian’s Study
Adrian poured himself a drink, his hands unsteady.
He had made a mistake.
Emma had seen too much.
He couldn’t let her look at him like that—like he was worth saving. Because if she did, he might start to believe it.
And that was dangerous.
His world didn’t allow weakness. He couldn’t afford tenderness. Not for his sister. Not for Emma. Not for anyone.
The walls he had built around himself had cracks now, and Emma was slipping through them without even trying.
That frightened him more than any rival or deal ever had.
He downed the drink in one harsh swallow, his jaw tight.
He couldn’t let her get closer.
He couldn’t let himself need her.
And yet, as he stared at the empty glass, one truth gnawed at him—he already did.

The Next Morning
Emma tried to keep her head down at work, burying herself in tasks. She told herself she wouldn’t think about him, wouldn’t replay that moment. But her treacherous mind refused to obey.
Every time she passed Adrian’s office, her chest tightened. She wondered if he was thinking about it too.
When she finally looked up, she caught him watching her through the glass wall. His expression was unreadable, but his gaze burned into her all the same.
Emma dropped her eyes quickly, heat rushing to her cheeks.
They didn’t speak the entire day.
But silence spoke louder than words.

That Evening – The Garden
Emma lingered in the garden outside the estate, needing fresh air after a long day. She wasn’t expecting him to find her there.
But he did.
Adrian’s footsteps crunched on the gravel path, slow and deliberate.
She turned, startled. “I thought you’d be working.”
“I was,” he said, his tone low. “But I needed…” He trailed off, his jaw tightening.
Emma arched a brow. “Needed what?”
He didn’t answer. Instead, he came closer, too close, until she could see the storm brewing in his eyes.
“I shouldn’t have let you see me yesterday,” he said finally, his voice rough.
Emma folded her arms, masking her racing heart. “Why? Because it made you look… human?”
His gaze darkened. “Because it made me weak.”
Her breath caught. “That wasn’t weakness, Adrian.”
“Then what was it?”
“Love.”
The word slipped out before she could stop it.
He stiffened, his eyes flashing with something unreadable—fear, anger, longing.
For a heartbeat, the air between them crackled, charged with everything they weren’t saying.
Emma swallowed hard. “Don’t push me away just because you’re afraid of what I see in you.”
Silence stretched.
Then, without another word, Adrian turned sharply and walked away, leaving her trembling in the garden, torn between fury and heartbreak.
Later that night, Emma found herself standing at her window, staring into the darkness. She hated the confusion he stirred in her, hated the way he could wound her with silence and still leave her yearning for more.
But as the clock struck midnight, a soft knock came at her door.
Emma froze, her heart leaping into her throat.
Slowly, she opened it—
And there he was. Adrian.
His eyes were stormy, his expression conflicted.
“We need to talk,” he said, his voice hoarse.
Before Emma could reply, he stepped inside, closing the door behind him.
The world outside vanished. Only the two of them remained, standing in the fragile quiet of a night that could change everything.
