I quickly pushed Jacob away, seeing my mother enter the room.
“What a wonderful sight...”
My mother commented as she closed the door behind her.
“I am happy to see my daughter and son having a sibling bonding moment.”
I force myself to smile as I greet my mother. “Mom, I’m so happy! Finally, I’m going to be an official member of the Emerald pack!” then I glared at Jacob with a warning in my eyes.
“Really? That’s good news ... But you need to work hard for that since there is an initiation for you to be accepted.”
The smile on my face immediately faded. I quickly looked at Jacob. “Initiation? What’s that?” I asked, horrified.
“All members have to pass a test, and it’s not too hard. So don’t worry too much, I’m sure you can pass on this one,” Jacob answered and sat down in his chair.
My forehead furrowed even more when Jacob did not answer my question directly.
“Jacob, it'd be better if you'd show Scarlett the test she needed to pass,”
My mother suggested as she placed her hand on my shoulder.
“Mom, he's too busy to show me around ... Why don’t you come with me instead?” I suggested, and wrapped my arms around my mother’s arm.
“Scarlett, I can’t... I just came here to tell Jacob that the date for the annual gathering has been finalized,”
“I hope I don’t put you in a lot of trouble because of my requests,” Jacob asserted while giving a folder to my mother.
“Not to worry, this is the last thing I can do for you,” my mother accepted the folder with a broad smile. “I’ll leave Scarlett in your care... Please make sure she will not give you trouble.”
My eyes widened, but my mother just laughed at me before leaving the room. “Is she my mother?” I murmured while shaking my head in disbelief.
“Hmm, it looks like aunt has no idea about what happened earlier,” Jacob commented.
“I feel like you are her real child, not me,” I exclaimed, pounding.
--------
The nick on my forehead started to deepen as we reached the rear part of the terrain, but Jacob remained walking.
“Jacob, we’ve been walking for a couple of minutes and we’re far from the packed compound! Maybe you can tell me where we’re going?” I could not restrain myself from asking.
“Scarlett, didn’t you hear what your mother said?” Jacob responds, but stays on the brisk walk.
“I clearly remember, my mom said, show me around the manor. She didn’t tell me to get out of the thick forest!” I exclaimed, disappointed. Fortunately, he told me to change into my rubber shoes before we started walking.
Jacob halted and turned to me. “This is part of the mansion, and in the central forest, the trial is being conducted for new members of the pack,” he explained while frowning.
I couldn’t stop my eyes from growing. Then I looked at my surroundings and estimated the lush green forest to be over ten kilometers wide. “Are you certain that the forest belongs to the Emerald pack?” I asked to make sure what I heard was correct.
“Thanks to your mother ... She negotiated with the council to get the forest. So this land now belongs to our pack,” Jacob added before continuing his walk.
“My mother attained this place? Incredible ...” I uttered while happily following Jacob. If earlier I felt distressed and tired while crossing the expanse of the forest today, I enjoy the view and the incredible fragrance of the air. Knowing that my mother achieved this breath-taking place.
The center of the forest Jacob was referring to was the stream coming from the mountain. “Wow, I was living in Emerald City but I didn’t know there was such a place,” I commented while playing in the cold water.
But instead of answering my compliment, Jacob turned to me seriously. “The first part of the trial is human endurance, the second is your wolf’s strength and the third is the coordination between you and your wolf,” he explained.
“Don’t tell me I need to pass the tree test to get into your pack?” A shrill tone quickly replaced the natural sweetness of my voice. And it only happens when I feel scared.
“You need two ... Since your human body is weak, your only hope is your wolf and your coordination,” Jacob explicitly commented on my ability.
I sighed and sat down on the sizeable chunk of rock. “My wolf is amazing, so I am certain she can pass this little trial of yours. But my problem was the 1st and the third trials ...” I trifled with it while lengthening my snout.
“Seems you are confident about your wolf. That’s a good start,” Jacob asserted while glaring at me.
“Of course, my wolf is one of a kind, but the problem is me ... I suck in everything!” I murmured, full of bitterness.
“Then you have nothing to worry about, just give your trust in your wolf,” Jacob muttered with a sly smirk on the corner of his lips.
“It’s easy for you to say that because you don’t experience the hardship of being alone and different! And I’ve wanted to be a member of the pack for a long time… if I failed the trial, then my dreams would crumble instantly!” I stated and stoned the stream.
“My little Scarlett, perhaps you forgot that I’ve been living alone for the past five years ... And if not for aunt Ana, Kurt, and you- I’m an orphan,” Jacob responded as he walked closer to my seat.
“But you have the whole pack… They respect and follow you,” I retorted.
As I look into Jacob’s eyes, it describes sadness, and I don’t know why. He had everything ... Everyone in the Emerald City adores him; even the other women in the other cities like and are crazy about him.
“Scarlett, the love of the family, differs from the pack. Yes, they are bound to me, but they can always leave me behind,” Jacob explained as he stopped walking in front of me.
What’s with that look he gives me? I asked myself while staring into Jacob’s eyes. Then his hand moves to caress my chick.
“Jacob, please don’t start,” I don’t know why I uttered that word.
