The only sorrow anyone had at saying goodbye to Germany was the children’s grief in parting from their pet cat Milksha. Daniela sobbed for hours on the train as it rattled south, taking them back to their blessed Italy.
Before long, Ettore was once again walking the streets of Trieste alongside Roberto, Edrico and Cappi. They were smoking cigarettes and had a purpose in their steps. They had been told they could get some low-paid work at a security firm and were on their way to apply.
The Paris Peace Treaty, in placing it under the protection of the United Nations, had established the city as the Free Territory of Trieste. They also learned that Fiume was now officially Rijeka, a city of Yugoslavia.
