AcknowledgmentsI sincerely thank my father for allowing me to interview him at length, sharing his family’s story and their struggle to flee from their beloved Italian city of Fiume. I also thank his brother and sisters for their support. I am grateful to my father for introducing me to other Italians who experienced similar plights and for serving as interpreter. I wish to acknowledge the hundreds of thousands of people who were displaced throughout Europe during World War II and to the countries who took so many in. It is believed that up to 350,000 Italians fled the north-eastern region of Italy in a mass exodus at the end of World War II, and between 5,000 to as many as 15,000 were killed, known as the ‘foibe’.
