Chapter elevenJuly 1945 Trieste Ettore, Cappi and Lisa sat in the back of a truck, their weary, sleep-deprived bodies rocking with the motion. They had reached Trieste, but they were yet to travel across the Morgan Line, a demarcation that had been established in Trieste to separate two military administrations. The Yugoslavs administered Zone B in the east and the Allied Military Government, comprising of British and American peacekeepers and law enforcers, governed Zone A in the west. The papers that Cappi had prepared would hopefully see them safely admitted into Trieste’s Zone A. The truck pulled up at a well-guarded checkpoint, where their papers were scrutinised over a fifteen-minute period. Lisa could hardly hold her anxiety in check; she was terrified of the heavily armed guards
