The rumor was very dangerous.
The pregnancy of the deceased princess sounded like an echo of doubt about Prince Mordecai's recent legitimization as the heir, as his offspring would have been the undisputed successor to the throne. It cast a shadow of doubt on the true causes of the couple's death.
For several months, the rumor remained just that, a whisper passing through the ears of a few, with many expressing their annoyance at what it could mean. It was rejected as if it were the same infection that had affected the deceased prince.
But, as with any rumor or lie, when repeated over a thousand times, it takes on a breath of truth and no longer goes unnoticed, resonating like an infant's cry in the middle of the night.
