CHAPTER 5

1896 Words
Serena's POV His words sting, and I flinch as if he'd slapped me. The sudden shift in his demeanor is jarring, and I'm caught off guard by the icy coldness in his voice. "Sorry for having emotions" I mutter sarcastically. "Next time I'll make sure to suppress them for your convenience." He whirls back around to face me, his eyes narrowing angrily. "Do not push me, Serena" he warns, his voice low and menacing. "You're already teetering on the edge, and I'm not in the mood to deal with your insolence. One more word from you and you'll regret it, mark my words." My anger flares at his threat, and I take a step closer, my fists clenching at my sides. "Oh, really?" I challenge. "What are you going to do, huh? Slap me around a bit?" Zacchaeus's eyes flash dangerously, his jaw clenching in anger. He's clearly restraining himself from responding with violence. "Don't test me" he repeats, his voice a low growl. "You're treading on dun ice and I'm not in the mood to play games. You either shut your mouth right now, or I'll find a better use for it." I raise my chin defiantly, refusing to back down. "Is that supposed to scare me?" I retort, my voice trembling with defiance. "You're all bark and no bite, Zach. You wouldn't actually hurt me, and you know it." His eyes darken further, the anger in his expression giving way to something much more dangerous. He takes a step closer, closing the distance between us. "Oh really?" he repeats, his voice a low, dangerous whisper. "You think I wouldn't hurt you? You think you have me all figured out?" He reaches out and grips my chin, his fingers tightening painfully. "You have no idea what I'm capable of when pushed to my limits." I gasp in surprise, pain shooting through my jaw as his fingers dig into my skin. I try to pull away, but his grip is unyielding. "Let me go" I say through gritted teeth, my voice shaking. "You're hurting me." "Good" he replies, his voice cold and unyielding. He lifts his other hand and grabs my hip, his grip tight enough to leave bruises. "Maybe this will finally get it through your thick skull that I'm not someone to be trifled with" he growls, shoving me backwards until I stumbling onto the bed. I lay there in the bed, my heart pounding in my chest, as Zacchaeus stands over me, his eyes boring into mine. "You'll stay here until I say otherwise," he commands, his voice brooking no argument. "And you'll do as I say, without question or resistance." He towers over me, his body language dominant and authoritative. It's clear that he won't tolerate any further defiance or disobedience. Zacchaeus backs up to the door, his eyes never leaving me. I can see the anger and irritation etched on his face, but there's something else in his gaze as well. Something dark and possessive. "Don't think about leaving this room," he warns, his voice a low growl. "I'll be back, and I expect you to be exactly where I left you. Got it?" I nod slowly, feeling a mixture of fear and anger. I know that I have no choice but to obey him in this moment, as he has me entirely at his mercy. The moment the door shuts behind him, I let out a shaky sigh of relief and frustration. I'm trapped in this room, entirely at his mercy, unable to escape his control. I sit up on the bed, feeling a mix of anger and helplessness wash over me. I hate being at his mercy like this, being treated like a puppet on a string. I escape to the bathroom, relieved to find a moment of solitude. I quickly change out of my fancy clothes and into something more comfortable, feeling a sense of comfort and familiarity in the soft fabric. As I look at myself in the mirror, I can see the signs of fatigue and annoyance etched on my face. I take a deep breath, trying to steady my nerves. I leave the bathroom and sat on the bed, trying to figure out what to do next. I don't know how long Zacchaeus will keep me in here, and the uncertainty is making me anxious. I look around the room, taking in the plush furniture and elegant decor. It's all so opulent and expensive, but I feel trapped in this room regardless. I sit for what feels like hours, the silence in the room weighing on me like a ton of bricks. My mind is racing, thinking of possible ways to escape, but I know that he's probably got everything secured tightly. After another few moments, the silence becomes too much to bear and I begin pacing around the room, feeling the frustration and anxiety building up inside me. I step out into the hallway and spot a maid nearby. Desperate for someone to talk to or ask for help, I approach her. "Have you seen Zacchaeus?" I ask urgently. The maid looks at me with a hesitant expression, clearly uncomfortable with my question. I ignore her cautionary look and quickly stride down the hallway, my mind already forming a guess as to where Zacchaeus might be. I stop outside one of the guest rooms, my hand hovering over the doorknob. My heart pounds in my chest as I hesitate, my hand poised to turn the knob. I know I shouldn't be here, that he'll be furious if he finds me, but I can't stand the uncertainty any longer. I take a deep breath and slowly turn the knob, bracing myself for whatever awaits me on the other side. I step into the room, my eyes slowly adjusting to the dim lighting. The sound of moans fills the air, and I can hear voices coming from the other side of the room. I creep closer, my heart racing as I anticipate what I'll see. I opened the lights just to see zach and the woman he was talking with in the gala earlier. The sudden flood of light startles Zacchaeus and the girl, and they freeze in mid-action, their gazes snapping to me. The girl looks mortified, her expression a mix of guilt and horror. Zacchaeus, on the other hand, scowls at me, his face a mask of anger and irritation. I stand there silently, my expression neutral despite the maelstrom of emotions swirling inside me. The scene before me hurts, but I refuse to let him see me break. "I came looking for you," I reply calmly, my voice betraying none of the pain ripping through me. The scene still hurts me even though i have seen him with different woman in this room. His eyes narrow as he looks at me, his gaze searching for any hint of vulnerability. But I keep my expression stoic, unwilling to give him the satisfaction of seeing me hurt. "And why exactly did you need me so urgently?" he asks, his tone cool and sarcastic. "Did you miss me that badly?" The girl shifts uncomfortably, her gaze flicking between Zacchaeus and me. She looks visibly uneasy, clearly unsure of what's about to happen. Zacchaeus sighs irritably, running a hand through his hair in frustration. "Can't you just behave for once? I told you to stay put in the bedroom, did I not?" "And did i listen?" i said with a scoff. "You know im not the type to sit around and wait for you to grace me with your presence." The tension in the room thickens as I continue speaking, my voice steady despite the anger building inside me. Zacchaeus's eyes flash with anger at my insubordination. "You really enjoy pushing my buttons, don't you?" he says, his voice a low growl. "You just can't bear to stay put and do as you're told, can you?" "I'm not your puppet, Zacchaeus," I say defiantly. "I won't be ordered around like some obedient little wife. I have my own mind and will, and I'm not afraid to use them." He crosses his arms and looks at me with a mix of irritation and grudging admiration. "You're maddening, you know that? You drive me to the brink of insanity with your stubborn defiance." "Well, I wouldn't have to defy you if you'd stop treating me like a mindless doll to move around on your chessboard," I retort, my voice strong and unwavering. I looked at the woman again "you still wanna stay?" i said coldly. The girl visibly hesitates, clearly feeling uncomfortable being caught in the middle of this altercation. She looks to Zacchaeus for guidance, unsure of what to do. He scowls at her, his irritation at me extending to her as well. "Get out," he snaps. "This doesn't concern you." The girl quickly grabs her clothes, gets dressed, and rushes out of the room. Once she's gone, the room falls silent, leaving just Zacchaeus and me staring at each other. Zacchaeus finally breaks the silence, his voice cool and calculated. "You just couldn't help yourself, could you? Always have to make a scene and stir the pot." I didn't talk and just stared at him. He walks closer to me, his eyes locked on mine. "What exactly did you hope to accomplish by coming in here and causing a commotion? Did you think you could just waltz in here, ruin my evening, and win some kind of victory over me?" "I'm the one causing commotion?" i shouted. He crosses his arms and gives me a steely glare. "Yes, you are. You barged in here unannounced and interrupted my... activities. That's the very definition of causing commotion." I felt a pang of hurt as he reminded me of his infidelity, but i pushed it aside. "And what were you doing that was so important, anyway?" i asked sarcastically. "Making sure your reputation as a womanizer was intact?" "That's not the point," he retorted, his irritation growing. "The point is that you had no right to come in here without my permission and disrupt me like that." "And maybe i wouldn't have had to if you'd actually been around to give me permission," i shoot back, my voice sharp. "But you were too busy getting your rocks off with some girl to bother paying attention to your wife. Again." He clenches his jaw and takes a step closer to me. "How many times do I have to tell you? What I do and who I do it with is none of your business. You're my wife because I need an heir, not a lover." His words stung, feeling like a slap in the face. "Is that all I am to you? A vessel for producing an heir?" "What else would you be?" he asks brusquely. "You certainly aren't here to give me companionship or affection. You've made that abundantly clear since the day we married." The harsh truth of his words stung like a thousand needles. "You act like this is all my fault," i said, my voice trembling. "But you're the one who's been treating me like a piece of furniture since day one. What did you expect me to do? Be grateful for your crumbs of attention while you parade your latest conquest in front of me?"
