But the respite was short-lived. The hacked Shadowling let out an ear-splitting shriek that seemed to ripple through the night air. The other creatures froze momentarily, then turned their attention back to Kai with renewed fury.
"System overload," the voice in his head warned. "Shadowling resistance increasing. Recommend tactical withdrawal."
Kai cursed under his breath. His cybernetic implant was powerful but had limitations. He could feel the strain as the hacked creature fought against his control, its movements becoming jerky and unpredictable.
"Come on," he muttered, backing away slowly. The family had disappeared around the corner of the building, but the Shadowlings were closing in again, forming a semicircle around him.
"New strategy required," the AI voice announced. "Suggest weaponization of nearby materials."
Kai's eyes darted around the alley. A broken pipe, some scattered debris, nothing substantial. Then he spotted it—an old fire hydrant, its top rusted and ready to be torn free. Summoning his determination, he grabbed the heavy metal with both hands and yanked it free, swinging it as a makeshift weapon.
The Shadowlings lunged forward, but Kai met them head-on, bashing the nearest creature's skull and buying precious seconds.
"System Override," he muttered, fingers twitching over the hidden menu. "Time to level up."
The first Shadowling lunged at him, its obsidian claws extended. Kai sidestepped, feeling the rush of air as the creature missed by inches.
"System Override: Combat Analysis," he commanded.
[SKILL UNLOCKED: Enhanced System Hack]
[Duration: 10 seconds -> 15 seconds]
[Range: 5 meters -> 8 meters]
Kai's vision sharpened as the upgrade took effect. The world around him seemed to slow despite the adrenaline coursing through his veins.
Three Shadowlings charged simultaneously from different angles. Their razor-sharp claws gleamed under the streetlights, leaving faint trails in the air.
"Not this time," Kai whispered, activating his pattern recognition hack.
Kai ducked as another Shadowling materialized around the nearest creature. This time, he could see more, adapting to their movements. He could feel it, the knowledge flowing into his mind like water pulsing through a cracked dam corrupted by dark energy.
He focused, pushing the System Override to its limits, hoping it would be enough to survive the relentless assault.
