Chapter Four – The Stranger

844 Words
Grace knew she was not imagining it. The black sedan behind her had followed for six blocks, every turn, every pause. By the time the iron gates of the Phillips estate closed behind her, her hands trembled against the steering wheel. Safe. Or so she told herself. But dread clung to her skin like smoke. The mansion was silent when she entered. No father’s booming voice. No Martha humming from the kitchen. Just echos. Too empty, too still, like the house was holding its breath. Grace locked her bedroom door, pulled the black notebook from her bag, and sat on the edge of her bed. Her fiancé’s handwriting leapt off the page scrawled names, jagged numbers, half-finished thoughts that felt more frantic the further she read. Daniel had been racing against something. Or someone. Her finger stilled on one name. Peter Cross. Circled. Three times. Her breath caught. Cross. Daniel’s last name. Who was he? Why had Daniel never said a word? A sharp knock on the balcony glass made her heart lurch violently. She spun around. A man stood outside. Tall. Broad-shouldered. Dressed in black. He did not fidget, didn’t shift. He waited, still and steady, as though he belonged there. Her mouth went dry. Then his voice came, low and controlled, cutting through the night like a blade. “Open the door, Grace.” Her blood ran cold. Her name. On his lips. “Who are you?” She demanded, clutching the notebook tightly against her chest. He stepped closer to the spill of moonlight. A scar traced his cheek. His jaw was sharp, his eyes were God; his eyes were dark, steady, and unreadable. The kind of eyes that saw straight through masks. “Peter Cross.” Her heart stuttered. The notebook slipped into her grip. “you are… Daniel’s brother?” Something flickered in his expression: pain, rage, sorrow. Then it was gone. “Daniel’s gone,” Peter said quietly. And now you’re in danger too. The words stole her breath. “Gone?” She shook her head, her voice breaking. No. That’s not he wouldn’t Peter’s gaze dropped to the notebook. That doesn’t belong to you. Grace hugged it tighter. He was my fiancé. If this holds answers, I’m not letting it go. You don’t understand what you’re holding. His voice sharpened, though his face stayed calm. That book is why Daniel vanished. People will kill to keep it buried. Her stomach knotted. The memory of Daniel’s apartment, the shadow of men moving inside slammed back into her mind. Every instinct screamed at her to lock the door, to scream, to run. But those eyes..Slow, dangerous, certain.. They rooted her in place. Before she could stop herself, her hand slid the balcony door open. The cold night air rushed in. Peter stepped inside. Not hurried. Not hesitant. Like a man who never asked permission. Grace’s breath snagged. Up close, he was all edges and shadows, a presence that filled the room. The scent of leather and smoke clung to him, sharp and intoxicating. Why should I trust you? she whispered, her voice trembling. “You shouldn’t,” he said simply. But you don’t have a choice. The honesty unsettled her more than any lie could have. His gaze flicked to the notebook again. “Daniel dug too deep. When he tried to pull out, they came for him. That’s why he’s gone.” Grace’s heart twisted, hot tears threatening. “No. Daniel loved me. He wouldn’t vanish. Not like this.” Peter’s jaw clenched. For the first time, his voice softened just a fraction. He didn’t leave you. He was taken. The words crushed her. Her knees weakened, her hand gripping the bedpost for balance. “Taken?” She breathed. Peter’s eyes locked on hers, unwavering. “Your father’s enemies don’t play games. They don’t threaten. They erase. Daniel crossed them. And now he nodded at the notebook you’re next. Her chest tightened, her whole body trembling. Her father’s warnings echoed in her ears, words she had dismissed as control. Now they sounded like prophecy. Why are you here?.She whispered. Peter stepped closer, close enough that her pulse tripped wildly. His presence filled the room, suffocating and magnetic all at once. Because when they come for you,”he said softly, you will need me. Grace’s lips parted, but no words came. She wanted to scream at him, demand answers, run from him, but her body betrayed her. She could not move. Couldn’t look away. The air between them burned, thick with fear and something hotter, something she refused to name. Peter leaned in, his voice dropping to a whisper. “Do you want the truth, Grace? Then you will have to trust me. Although it kills you.” Her breath trembled, caught between fury and something dangerously close to desire. And at that moment, Grace understood one terrifying truth: Peter Cross was not just a stranger. Not just a name in a notebook. He was the storm that swallowed Daniel whole. And now, he was here for her.
