Chapter 5: That Night Changed Everything
It was after a long corporate dinner. Everyone had left — except Layla and Khalid.
The city lights glowed through the glass windows of the 21st floor. They stood alone in the hallway, the silence between them heavier than ever.
Khalid stepped closer.
“You really don’t remember me, do you?” he asked softly.
Layla’s breath caught. She looked up at him.
“I do,” she admitted, her voice barely a whisper.
“I just… didn’t know if I should say it.”
Khalid blinked. “Why?”
Layla looked away. “Because I worked hard to be here. I didn’t want anyone to think I got this job through… you.”
He tilted his head. “There is no ‘through me’. You earned your place.”
Their eyes locked again — longer this time. Something shifted in the air.
And in that moment, just for a heartbeat, all the rules disappeared.
She didn’t stop him when he touched her hand.
She didn’t stop herself when she leaned in.
And neither did he, when their lips met in silence — no words, just years of emotion they never spoke.

Chapter 6: The Morning After
Layla sat on her bed, staring at the ceiling.
She should’ve said no.
She should’ve walked away.
Not because she didn’t feel anything.
But because feelings had no space in the career she’d built.
People already whispered when women climbed too high.
They’d whisper louder if they knew she kissed the CEO.
She got up, picked her phone, and typed the message she’d been avoiding:
> “Let’s just keep things professional from now on. It’s better that way.”
She hit send.
Seconds later, the reply came:
> “If that’s what you want… I’ll respect it.”
She closed her eyes.
But her heart didn’t listen.
Chapter 7: The Distance She Chose
For days, Layla kept her distance.
Emails only. No unnecessary meetings. No eye contact in the elevator.
Her heart told one story — her career demanded another.
Besides, people were already whispering. HR and the CEO? That was dangerous.
But Khalid didn’t stop watching her from a distance. He didn’t pressure her.
Not yet.
Until one evening…
She worked late — the office almost empty.
A knock on the glass door.
She looked up, and there he was.
Still in his suit, holding two cups of coffee.
“I thought maybe you'd still be here,” he said.
She hesitated. “You shouldn't be here.”
He stepped in. “I wanted to see you.”
“I told you—”
He cut her off, his voice low. “I know what you said. And I tried, Layla. But I can’t just forget that night. Can you?”
She looked away. Her throat tightened. “You should.”

Chapter 8: The Almost Kiss
He placed the coffee down gently. Walked around her desk. Stopped just inches from her.
“I remember you from class,” he said. “I remember everything. And I’ve built an empire since then, Layla… but nothing I built ever mattered more than that look in your eyes right now.”
Her voice shook. “Khalid, please…”
He touched her cheek — so lightly she could barely feel it.
“I promise not to cross your line,” he whispered. “But I had to try… once more.”
He leaned in.
Closer.
His lips hovered near hers, his breath warm against her skin.
Layla’s heart screamed yes — but her mind whispered no.
She stepped back.
“I can’t,” she said, tears forming. “Not like this.”
He closed his eyes for a moment. Then nodded, with a bittersweet smile.
“I’ll wait, then.”
He turned and walked out, leaving her breathless… and broken in silence.

Chapter 9: The Struggle Within
Layla sat at her desk long after he left, her fingers gripping the edge.
She wanted him.
But she wanted her future, too.
She was tired of people saying women in power got there by “sleeping their way up.”
She hated how one kiss could destroy years of effort.
But her heart… it wasn’t listening anymore.
Chapter 10: A Whisper That Shattered Her
It started as a whisper in the hallway.
Two coworkers chatting near the coffee machine.
"Did you hear?"
"Hear what?"
"About Mr. Arman. He’s engaged — some business deal with his father's old friend’s daughter. Big wedding coming up, apparently."
Layla froze.
Her hands trembled slightly as she poured her coffee. She tried not to listen… but every word stabbed her heart.
She walked away before they noticed her.
Her mind spinning.
Engaged?
Why didn’t he tell me? Why kiss me? Why wait?
Back in her office, she stared blankly at her screen. A thousand thoughts flooded her, none of them kind.
That night meant nothing to him.
She was just a game.

Chapter 11: The Confrontation She Avoided
Khalid called her in for a meeting. A “performance review.”
She entered his office stiffly, refusing to sit.
“You’re distant again,” he said. “Did I do something wrong?”
She swallowed hard. “Why didn’t you tell me?”
He frowned. “Tell you what?”
“That you’re engaged,” she said sharply.
Silence.
Something flickered in his eyes — surprise, then regret.
“It’s not what you think,” he began. “It’s complicated. It’s not even real—”
“Stop,” she said, her voice breaking. “Just stop.”
He stepped forward, reaching for her hand. “Layla, please—”
She pulled away.
“You kissed me… knowing you belonged to someone else.”
“I don’t belong to her.”
“But she wears your ring.”
He had no words.
Layla turned toward the door, holding back tears.
“You said you’d wait for me.
But maybe… you were just waiting until I found out the truth.”
She walked out, and this time — she didn’t look back.
