Both Elena and Dimitri’s head snapped to the door. Elena’s heart raced as she wondered what the commotion outside was all about. From Dimitri’s expression, she could tell even he had not been expecting to hear the gunshots.
Elena tried to break into a run for the door but Dimitri was fast enough to drag her backwards, her back slamming into his chest as his fingers dug into her skin.
