After the surprise encounter with Bridgett in his rooms, Marcus found himself keeping an eye out for her more and more. He would see her milling on the balcony that overlooked the entry hall, watching his comings and goings. He caught her visiting his wolfhounds to nurse the runt of the newest litter, and when he was in his study he could look out the window and see her slipping out to the barn to feed his horses carrots and apples. She would then go out to the morning room, which he never used, and read. She had put aside the Bible and had begun reading a small book Father Hillstand had given her on Saint Augustine which she seemed to be enjoying.
