6. Darkness of Betrayals

The mansion was steeped in silence, save for the distant hum of the city. Elena’s heels clicked sharply against the marble floors as she strode through the cavernous hallways, her pulse quickening with each step. She could feel it—the weight of the walls closing in on her, the suffocating air thick with secrets that had festered for years. Her eyes were steely with determination, but deep down, the rage was boiling over. ‘Henri’. Her father, the man who had abandoned her, the man who had torn her family apart, who thought he could control her life even from the shadows. Tonight, she had to confront him. She had to show him that she wasn’t the little girl he could manipulate any longer. The door to his study was slightly ajar, the soft glow of a desk lamp spilling out from the crack. Elena pushed it open without hesitation, her presence like a storm, impossible to ignore. Henri was seated behind his desk, the faint click of his pen tapping against the polished wood the only sign of life in the otherwise cold room. He looked up slowly, his eyes narrowing when they met hers. For a split second, she saw something—something flicker in the depths of his gaze—but it was gone before she could place it. “So, the little bird finally comes home,” he said, his voice a low, mocking drawl. His lips curled into a smirk as if he’d been waiting for her to make this move. Elena’s heart tightened, but she didn’t show it. “You always loved playing the game, didn’t you, Henri?” she said, her voice calm but laced with venom. “Pretending to be the doting father while pulling the strings behind my back.” Henri didn’t flinch. He leaned back in his chair, his fingers steepled in front of him as he studied her. His eyes were as cold and calculating as ever, but there was an edge of something darker behind them. He knew why she was here. He knew the questions that burned inside her, and yet, he was savoring every second of her struggle. “Do you honestly think you’re still playing by your own rules?” he asked, his voice a low growl. “You think you can outsmart me? You think you’ve escaped the web I wove around you?” Elena’s chest tightened. Her hands curled into fists at her sides, and for a moment, she wondered how long she could hold her composure. But no. She wasn’t going to let him break her. Not tonight. “You’re wrong,” she said, her tone hardening. “I’m not your puppet anymore. I’m not that little girl you can manipulate with a few well-chosen words.” Henri’s smile didn’t falter. He stood slowly from his desk, his presence looming over her as if he were an immovable force, a mountain of power and control. His eyes never left hers, and the air between them crackled with the weight of unspoken history. “You still don’t get it, do you?” he said softly, almost as if he were pitying her. “You think this is about rebellion. But it’s never been about rebellion. This is about power, Elena. And you’re in way over your head.” She felt the sting of his words, but she didn’t back down. “And what? You think Damien’s going to save me?” she shot back, her voice cutting through the air like a blade. “You think I’m marrying him for protection? I’m not some helpless little girl anymore, Henri.” Henri’s lips twisted into a more sinister smile, and for a moment, Elena felt a cold shiver race down her spine. “No,” he said, taking a step closer, his voice dripping with disdain. “You’re a pawn. You always have been. And now, you’re playing right into my hands.” Elena’s pulse spiked, the knot of fury in her stomach tightening. “I’m not a pawn, and I never will be. And I’m marrying Damien because I have no choice, Henri. Because you made sure of that.” Henri’s gaze hardened, his eyes darkening with something colder than anger. “You think you’re making a choice? Do you really believe you’re in control of this situation?” She swallowed hard, the truth of his words sinking in like acid in her gut. He was right—she hadn’t made this choice for herself. It was Damien’s game, his manipulation, but she was forced into it by the circumstances Henri had created. Still, Elena wouldn’t let him see the cracks. She wouldn’t give him the satisfaction of knowing how much this situation had destroyed her. “I’m not doing this for you,” she spat, the bitterness of her words stinging her tongue. “I’m doing this to survive. Because you—” She cut herself off, the raw pain of the words threatening to spill out. But she wouldn’t let it. She wouldn’t give him the satisfaction. Henri’s eyes gleamed with something that looked like amusement, but there was an edge to it that sent a chill down her spine. “Survival,” he repeated. “Is that what this is? A survival strategy?” He moved even closer, until there was barely any space between them, his towering figure shadowing her completely. “You think I don’t see through you, Elena? You think you’re smarter than me?” She took a step back, her heart racing in her chest, but she refused to show any fear. “I’m smarter than you ever gave me credit for,” she said, her voice steady, though her insides were twisted in knots. “And I’ll get what I want—no matter what it takes.” Henri’s expression darkened, the hint of regret in his eyes vanishing as quickly as it had appeared. “You won’t destroy me, Elena. You won’t tear down everything I’ve built. I made you, and I can ruin you just as easily.” She felt a chill settle deep in her bones. The weight of his words hung heavily in the air, a threat wrapped in the guise of a warning. But Elena didn’t flinch. She couldn’t afford to. As she turned to leave, Henri’s voice echoed behind her, laced with venom. “You’ll always be mine, Elena. No matter what you do, you’ll always be part of me.” Elena’s hand froze on the door, her back still turned to him. She could feel the anger bubbling beneath her skin, but she controlled it. “I’m not yours,” she said through clenched teeth. “Not anymore.” And with that, she stepped out of his study, the door slamming shut behind her with a finality that rang through the empty hallways.
