Ethan stood gallantly, not minding what would come next.
Darius chuckled, moving only one side of his cheek.
"Where are your manners, Ethan?" another head of a family snapped, rising to his feet in anger.
His face tightened, he looked like someone who had been waiting for the right opportunity to unleash his anger at Ethan.
"Perhaps his mother, Racheal, didn’t give him proper training," the head of the Lester family said, stepping closer.
"So his mother is.. the head of the Fearless family?"
I muttered in my mind, raising an eyebrow. Now I understood.
That explained why he was attending this meeting and why his presence didn’t feel strange anymore.
Ethan chuckled, but his smile slowly faded into anger.
"Why don’t you ask her... in her grave?" he replied coldly, stepping closer to the man.
His eyes glowed.
They were golden.
A werewolf.
"What?" I gasped aloud in shock, realizing he was just like me.
"Ethan!" Darius called urgently, but Ethan’s wolfish form didn’t seem like a surprise, not to him and not to the other families.
Ethan took a quick glance at his father, then looked away.
He hissed through clenched teeth,
"Darius, I’ve always told you. Ethan needs to be tamed, or he’ll one day go out of control."
The head of the Lester family snapped at Darius, gnashing his teeth.
I understood what he meant by being “tamed.”
Just like what they did to me.
Silver poison.
"I’m willing to pay 100 percent of my mother’s treasure to have her," Ethan declared boldly, breaking the record and looking straight into Darius’ eyes.
The hall went silent immediately, the families staring at one another in shock.
Then a low murmur of disbelief spread across the room.
I, on the other hand, remained seated, watching each piece of their drama unfold.
"I’ve always known you know the code to the safe house," Darius chuckled.
"Racheal never told any soul about the code to her treasure house, not even her brother," one of them said loudly.
"Why should we trust you?" Darius asked, raising his eyebrows eagerly.
Ethan chuckled.
"We all know everyone’s treasures are not up to 30 percent of my mother’s treasure, not to talk of properties."
He smiled, turning to face me.
My heart skipped.
"So, I’m giving you 100 percent of her treasures to have Selene forever."
He dipped his hand into his pocket, keeping his composure tight.
Silence broke out. Everyone fixed their eyes on Ethan, including me.
To everyone, he was a fool.
Darius broke the silence, clapping his hands.
"Since my son has decided to follow the rules, then he’ll have her," he scoffed.
"She will be his if the payment is done," Darius added, smiling.
Gradually, his smile faded, his gaze narrowing as it landed on Ethan.
His eyes turned cold.
But Ethan didn’t flinch. He didn’t turn his sharp gaze away from his father.
"So be it," he smiled, playing along.
He walked down to his father-in-law in slow motion, his steps carrying every intense feeling.
"Father, you never figured out that Mother has always loved you.
Come to my abode tomorrow, then I’ll tell you the passcode."
He chuckled, then turned to me, still smiling.
"Let’s go, Selene."
He stretched his hands for me to reach.
Without hesitation, I stood up gently, my heart still racing.
Who would have thought that if one day Darius would lose me, it would be to his son?
I walked up to Ethan, then grabbed his hand.
"I'm sorry, you all have to excuse us," Ethan said abruptly, his grip on my hand firm as we turned to leave.
I followed, my mind still racing.
Escape from Darius's piercing gaze was my only thought.
As we walked out, one of the families screamed loudly.
"Ethan! How dare you walk away!"
He screamed at the top of his voice, but Ethan didn’t listen to any of his words.
I could feel all of their eyes on us as we finally stepped out.
Not long after, a sleek car guided itself to a stop before us, its door swinging open like a whispered invitation.
Everything seemed planned, arranged.
Ethan guided me in, his hand on the small of my back, and slid in beside me.
The door closed with a soft thud, sealing us in.
I stared straight ahead, my mind a maze of questions.
Was this planned? Was it all orchestrated?
I didn’t want to voice them.
The driver’s eyes met mine in the rearview mirror, but I looked away.
I wondered where we were going.
“We’re going to my place,” he broke the silence, as if he read my mind.
I avoided his gaze, and I heard him chuckle slightly.
“I know you have a lot of questions right now…”
He shifted my chin, forcing me to meet his eyes.
“All you have to know for now is that you're mine,” he concluded.
As I turned my face away from his hand, trying to look toward the other side of the car, he pulled me gently by the waist.
I leaned into him, his strong grip drawing me flush against his chest.
My mouth almost crashed into his, his lips brushing in a tease that sent heat surging through me.
Our breaths mingled into each other.
His cool fingers dug into my side, sliding under my gown to trace the curve of my other side.
His hip ignited a throb between my thighs.
I pressed closer, craving the forbidden press of his hardness against me.
Then the driver cleared his throat.
“Ethan, can we go now?” he asked casually, not bothering to hide his amusement.
“Yes, please,”Ethan said, still staring into my eyes.
He finally released me gently.
The car zoomed off at top speed.
***
We pulled up to a huge estate, the gates opening wide.
I stared out the window at the massive houses like castles far bigger than the Light family’s place.
I wondered in awe how anyone could own all of this.
It felt unreal.
It turns out Ethan’s mom was the richest treasure hunter before she died.
I wondered how.
We drove into the mansion compound, exotic cars parked everywhere.
As we stepped out, I knew this was his spot.
“Welcome to my abode,” Ethan said coolly.
The driver got out with a grin, then let out a loud howl.
Suddenly, howls echoed back from everywhere.
Ethan looked straight at me, his eyes intense.
That’s when it hit me.
He didn’t bring me here to be his slave.
