The Audition

293 Words
Amaara's heart raced as she stood outside the school auditorium, the worn wooden door handle cool against her sweaty palm. Sofia's encouragement echoed in her mind. "Go for it, Amaara! You'll crush it!" She took a deep breath, the scent of fresh paint and stale air filling her lungs, and pushed open the door. Inside, Ms. Patel, the drama teacher, greeted her warmly, a bright smile on her round face. "Amaara, so glad you decided to audition. You're one of our hidden talents." Amaara smiled nervously, fidgeting with her hijab, ensuring every strand of hair was hidden. She glanced around the empty auditorium, the stage lights casting long shadows. Ms. Patel handed her a script. "Let's see your interpretation of Juliet's monologue." Amaara's hands trembled slightly as she took the pages. She had practiced for weeks, but her mother's disapproval still lingered in her mind. What if Mama finds out? What if I embarrass myself? But as she began to read, Amaara's doubts crept in like unwanted guests. "Oh Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou Romeo?" Her voice wavered, then strengthened, as she poured her emotions into the words. After the audition, Ms. Patel beamed. "Amaara, that was fantastic! You have real talent. I think you'd be perfect for the lead." Amaara floated out of the auditorium, feeling seen, her heart soaring. But as she walked down the hallway, she spotted her mother's friend, Mrs. Khan, watching her with a curious gaze. Amaara's heart sank. Would Mrs. Khan tell Mama about the audition? She quickened her pace, but Mrs. Khan caught up. "Amaara, beta, what were you doing in the auditorium?" Amaara hesitated. "Just...just helping Ms. Patel with something." Mrs. Khan's eyes narrowed. "I saw you on stage. You were acting." Amaara's face burned.
