Two In One

The pitch-black shadow tore through the winding stone corridors of the Court of Shadows, a silent, predatory streak of darkness. It didn’t slide along the walls like a normal reflection; it moved with a violent, unnatural speed, defying the flickering torchlight that threatened to expose it. Upward it climbed, bypassing the guards, slipping through the cracks under heavy iron doors, driven by a singular, malicious purpose. It was heading straight for the luxurious eastern wing. The wing where Vivian resided. In the brightly lit kitchen of the eastern wing, a young maid named Esther was carefully preparing a silver tray. A porcelain teapot sat in the center, steam gently curling from its spout, surrounded by a delicate matching cup and saucer. Vivian demanded her midnight tea precisely on time, and she was notorious for her cruel temper if any servant kept her waiting. Esther smoothed down her apron, took a deep breath to steady her nerves, and lifted the heavy tray. She stepped out into the quiet hallway, her soft slippers clicking against the marble floor. The air suddenly turned ice-cold. Esther shivered, the breath catching in her throat as a visible mist bloomed from her lips. "What in the world...?" Esther muttered, blinking against the sudden chill. Before she could take another step, the shadow lunged. It swarmed up from the floorboards like a wave of living ink, wrapping around her ankles, climbing her legs, and engulfing her torso in a suffocating embrace. Esther’s eyes widened in sheer terror. She tried to scream, but the darkness shoved itself down her throat, choking out the sound. The silver tray wobbled violently. With a brutal, invisible twist, the life was snuffed out of Esther’s eyes. She went entirely limp, her spine snapping backward at an unnatural angle. Yet, the tray didn't drop. The shadow caught it, suspending it in the air for a fraction of a second as it completely poured itself into the maid's lifeless flesh. Esther’s head snapped back into place with a sickening crack. At first, the body didn't know how to function. The possessed maid took a step forward, her left leg dragging heavily, her arms twitching as if her limbs belonged to a broken puppet. She stumbled against the wall, the teacup rattling against the saucer. "Ugh..." a hollow, dual-toned voice grated from Esther's lips. She stopped, tilting her head. She lifted her right hand, flexing the fingers one by one, studying them with a detached, cold curiosity. The shadow inside was rapidly mapping the nervous system, learning the muscle memory of the corpse. Another step. This time, it was smoother. By the third step, the twitching stopped entirely. The shadow had mastered the vessel. Esther walked forward perfectly normally, a serene, empty smile plastered onto her face. She paused just outside Vivian’s bedroom door, looking down at the steaming pot of tea. Slowly, Esther opened her mouth. Her jaw unhinged slightly further than a normal human's could. A thick, bubbling black liquid began to pour from her mouth, dripping directly into the narrow spout of the teapot. The dark substance hissed softly as it mixed with the hot liquid, completely dissolving within seconds. The tea returned to its amber color, looking entirely untouched. Esther wiped her lips, smoothed her apron once more, and knocked gently on the door. There was no answer, but the sound of rushing water echoed from the adjacent bathroom. Vivian was washing up. Esther turned the brass knob, stepping into the lavish, silk-draped bedchamber, and set the tray down on the dark mahogany nightstand. Then, she stood perfectly still, hands clasped in front of her, waiting. A few minutes later, the bathroom door swung open. Vivian stepped out, wrapping a plush silk robe around her shoulders. Her hair was damp, and her face was pinched into its usual expression of high-born arrogance. Seeing the maid standing by her bed, she scoffed loudly. "You're late," Vivian snapped, crossing her arms as she walked over. "Do you have any idea how long I’ve been waiting? If my tea is cold, Esther, I will personally see to it that you are thrown into the lower courtyards." The maid didn't flinch. She simply bowed her head, her voice smooth and entirely devoid of fear. "My apologies, Lady Vivian. The water took longer to boil tonight. Please, enjoy. It is just the way you like it." Vivian rolled her eyes, throwing herself onto the plush mattress. "Just pour it and get out of my sight. You look ridiculous standing there like a statue." Esther smiled—a wide, unnaturally placid smile that didn't reach her vacant eyes. She stepped forward, lifted the porcelain teapot with perfect grace, and poured the amber liquid into the cup. "As you wish, my lady." Vivian reached out, snatching the cup from the tray. She didn't blow on it to cool it down; she simply took a large, greedy gulp, eager to wash away the frustrations of the day. The moment the liquid slid down her throat, Vivian froze. The porcelain cup slipped from her fingers, clattering loudly against the saucer, spilling the remaining tea across the silver tray. Vivian’s posture went completely rigid. Her head tilted backward, her jaw dropping open slightly as her eyes turned completely glazy, vacant, and unseeing—looking exactly like someone heavily drugged, wiped clean of all conscious thought. Esther didn't waste a single heartbeat. She leaned over the bed, gripping Vivian’s shoulders with a strength that didn't belong to a maid. She pressed her lips firmly against Vivian's. Vivian gasped against the contact, and instantly, thick black lines surfaced in Vivian’s wide, unblinking eyes. The dark veins pulsed violently against her irises, anchoring themselves deep into her mind, before slowly receding, disappearing entirely beneath the surface. Esther pulled away, straightening her spine and fixing her apron. For a moment, Vivian sat perfectly still. Then, the glazed look vanished. Her eyes darkened, losing every ounce of their usual spoiled, petulant light, replaced by a cold, ancient malice. She looked up at the maid, her expression turning deeply respectful, almost reverent. "Princess," Vivian whispered, her voice low and laced with a dark, secondary echo. The possessed maid looked down at her, the wide, wicked smile returning to Esther's face. The two women stared at one another in the dim, candlelit room, an unspoken, terrifying understanding passing between them. Together, their lips moved in perfect, chilling unison, whispering a single word into the quiet room: "Tomorrow." Without another word, Vivian turned over, sliding beneath her heavy silk blankets and closing her eyes, instantly falling into a deep, unnatural sleep. Esther picked up the ruined tea tray, her expression turning back into that of a simple, unassuming servant, and quietly exited the chamber, locking the door behind her. The room fell into total stillness. The single candle on the nightstand flickered, casting its warm light across the bed where Vivian lay sleeping. But as the flame danced, stretching the shadows across the silk sheets, the light revealed a horrifying sight. Stretching out from beneath Vivian’s resting form, completely separate and independent of one another, lay two distinct, pitch-black shadows.
