Maya's Seeker pointed to a high school in Nebraska. The school was empty. No students. No teachers. Just one janitor.
Kira listened. “Two people inside. Their thoughts are mixed up. One thinks he's the other.”
“Body swap fragment,” Dr. Ellis said. “Rare. The host touches two people. They trade bodies. The fragment feeds on the confusion.”
They found the janitor in the gym. He mopped the floor. His name tag said “Carl.” But when he spoke, a teenage girl's voice came out.
“Help me,” he said. “I'm not Carl. I'm Megan. I'm a sophomore. Carl touched me. Now I'm stuck in his body.”
“Where's Carl?” Julian asked.
The girl pointed at a storage closet. They opened it. A teenage girl lay on the floor. She had Carl's voice. “Don't hurt me. I didn't mean to swap.”
