The Visitor at Dawn

1052 Words

Someone knocked on the farmhouse door at 5 AM. Leo answered with his rifle. A woman stood outside. Mid-twenties. Brown coat. Empty hands. “I need Julian Vance,” she said. “Who's asking?” “His daughter.” The Lie Julian walked to the door. Looked at the woman. “I don't have a daughter.” “You don't remember me. I was in the Vault. Door 487,203. You pulled a fragment from my chest. I was seven years old then.” Julian stared. Her face was familiar. The same brown hair. Same small nose. “You're Chloe,” he said. “No. Chloe is the guard's daughter. I'm Maya. You saved my life when I was a child.” “Why are you here?” “The guard you saved yesterday. He's my father.” Julian's hands went cold. “The Mimic fragment attached to your father.” “I know. You saved him. Now I want to help you.”
