The Curator's First Move

1752 Words
The bunker alarms went off at 2 AM. Not a drill. A real breach. Someone opened the outer door from the outside. Leo grabbed his rifle. Dara pulled her blade. Julian grabbed his cane. “Who has the access code?” Chen shouted. “Only us,” Julian said. “Change it yesterday.” “I did. Someone still got in.” Kira closed her eyes. “Three people. Walking down the main hallway. Armed.” “How many?” Marcus asked. “Three. But they're not soldiers. They're different.” “Different how?” “Their fragments are huge. I can't hear their thoughts clearly.” The Visitors Three people walked into the bunker's main room. Two men. One woman. All wore gray coats. No weapons visible. The woman stepped forward. Short gray hair. Cold eyes. “Julian Vance. I'm the Curator.” Julian didn't move. “You sent Porter.” “Porter was a test. To see if you're worth my time.” “Am I?” “You pulled a fragment from Briggs' spine. You survived the Vault. You broke the Protocol. Yes. You're worth my time.” Dara kept her blade ready. “What do you want?” “I want to offer you a job.” “Not interested.” The Curator smiled. “Hear me out. I collect fragments. Not to use them. To lock them away. So no one else can be hurt.” “You sent Porter to kill us,” Julian said. “Porter acted alone. I only wanted the Origin for my collection. But now I see you're more valuable than the fragment.” “Valuable how?” “You can find fragments better than anyone. Work for me. Travel the world. Lock away every dangerous fragment. Retire in peace.” SYSTEM: NEW OFFER — WORK FOR THE CURATOR. REWARD: SAFETY FOR YOUR ALLIES. RISK: UNKNOWN. Truth Sense buzzed. The Curator believed what she said. But she wasn't telling everything. “What's the catch?” Julian asked. “The catch is you leave your family here. You come alone. You work alone. For five years.” “No,” Dara said. The Curator looked at Dara. “He's old. He's tired. Five years of work. Then he's free. Your family stays safe in this bunker. I'll even supply food and medicine.” Lily grabbed Julian's hand. “Don't go.” Julian looked at the Curator. “You said you lock fragments away. Where?” “In a vault. Deep underground. Safer than this bunker.” “Can I see it?” “No.” “Then no deal.” The Curator's smile faded. “That's unfortunate.” She raised her hand. Blue light shot from her palm. Hit Marcus in the chest. He fell. “Marcus!” Pip ran to him. The two men with the Curator pulled out small rods. Blue light extended from the tips. Light swords. Leo fired his rifle. The Curator blocked the bullet with a light shield. “Don't,” she said. “I don't want to kill anyone. But I will.” The Fight Dara threw her blade. The Curator caught it mid-air. Dropped it on the floor. “I've collected over two hundred fragments. I have every power you've seen and more.” Julian stepped forward. “Then show me.” He activated Bone Breaker. Pointed at the Curator's leg. Nothing happened. “Doesn't work,” the Curator said. “I have a fragment that blocks bone manipulation.” Ethan made a copy of her. The copy grabbed her arm. The Curator touched the copy. It dissolved. “Copies don't work on me.” Felix played a chord. Pink light hit her. She didn't flinch. “Music doesn't work on me.” Kira whispered to Julian. “She has a fragment that nullifies other fragments. She's immune to everything.” “Then we fight without fragments,” Julian said. He swung his cane at her head. She caught it. Snapped it in half. “You're old. You're slow. You have nothing.” “I have friends.” Jenna phased behind the Curator. Grabbed her neck. The Curator reached back. Touched Jenna's arm. Jenna's phasing stopped. She fell to the floor. “I can also nullify other fragments by touch,” the Curator said. “You can't touch me without losing your power.” The Retreat Julian looked at his people. Marcus was down. Jenna was down. Leo's broken arm couldn't fire straight. “Everyone stop,” Julian said. The Curator raised her hand. Her men lowered their light rods. “Smart,” she said. “I'm not agreeing to your deal. But I'm not getting my people killed tonight.” “Then what are you doing?” “Buying time.” Dara grabbed Marcus. Pulled him behind a concrete pillar. His chest had a burn mark but he was breathing. “Marcus is alive,” she said. “Good,” Julian said. “Now leave. All of you.” “No,” Lily said. “Lily. Go with Mira. Now.” Mira grabbed Lily's hand. Pulled her toward the back hallway. The Curator watched. “Let them run. I only need you.” “Why me?” “Because you're the only person who ever broke a fragment's hold. I need that skill for my collection.” Julian stood alone in the middle of the room. Dara refused to leave. Stood next to him. “Two against three,” the Curator said. “Bad odds.” Dara pulled a knife from her boot. “I don't need fragments to cut you.” The Curator laughed. “Bold.” She raised her hand to strike. The Twist A gunshot rang out. The Curator's hand snapped back. Blood dripped from her palm. Leo fired from the floor. His aim was off because of his broken arm. But he hit her. “You shot me,” the Curator said. “You hurt my friend.” The two men with the Curator raised their light rods. Ran at Leo. Pip tackled one. Marcus, still on the ground, swept the other's legs. Ethan made copies of the men. The copies grabbed the originals. Held them down. The Curator touched her bleeding hand. Looked at Julian. “You think this changes anything?” “It changes that you're not invincible,” Julian said. He walked toward her. She tried to use her nullification touch. Julian grabbed her wrist. His Iron Will resisted the power drain. “How are you doing this?” she asked. “I'm old. I'm tired. And I don't care about your fragments.” He squeezed her wrist. Bone Breaker. It worked this time. Her radius cracked. She screamed. Her concentration broke. The nullification field dropped. Jenna stood up. Phased through the Curator's chest. Not to hurt. To scare. The Curator stumbled back. “You can't win. I have hundreds of fragments. I have armies.” “You have nothing,” Julian said. “You collect power because you're empty inside.” Truth Sense buzzed. The words hit her hard. Her face crumbled. For one second, she looked like a scared woman. Not a collector. Not a Curator. Then she raised her good hand. Blue light exploded. The bunker lights went out. When they came back, she was gone. Her men were gone. The Aftermath Marcus sat up. His chest burned. “Did we win?” “We survived,” Dara said. Chen checked the door. “She locked it from the outside. Same barrier as Porter.” “Can you break it?” Julian asked. Ethan touched the door. “No. She's stronger than Porter.” “Then we're trapped again.” Lily ran back into the room. Hugged Julian. “I was scared.” “Me too.” Mira pulled out her prediction marble. “I see a way out. The ventilation shaft. Same as before.” “She'll block it too,” Kira said. “She knows our tricks.” Julian looked at the map on the wall. “There's another exit. Old tunnel. Leads to the mountain's west side. Chen, you said it collapsed.” “Twenty years ago. Solid rock.” “Then we un-collapse it.” Leo picked up a sledgehammer. “I'll start.” “Your arm is broken,” Tamara said. “My other arm works.” They walked to the west tunnel. Rubble blocked the path. Leo swung the hammer. Rock cracked. Dust filled the air. Pip joined him. Then Marcus. Then Dara. Julian watched. His cane was broken. He leaned on the wall. Lily handed him a drawing. The Curator with a mustache and a tiny hand. “She hurt Marcus,” Lily said. “She did.” “I hate her.” “Don't hate. Just stop her.” SYSTEM: JULIAN VANCE — LEVEL 79 → LEVEL 80. NEW TITLE: “THE WALL BREAKER.” LEGACY: ALL ALLIES GAIN +1 TO PHYSICAL LABOR SKILLS. The Breakthrough After two hours, Leo broke through. Cold air rushed in. Moonlight. They climbed out. Stood on the mountain slope. The bunker was behind them. The Curator's barrier still glowed on the door. “We need a new home,” Pip said. “We need to find her first,” Julian said. “Before she finds us.” Chen pulled out a satellite phone. “I have a contact. Old company safe house. Wyoming. No one knows about it.” “Take us there.” They walked down the mountain. Three vans waited at the bottom. Chen hotwired one. Julian sat in the front. Dara drove. “You're level 80,” she said. “Numbers don't mean much.” “They mean you're still standing.” Marcus held his burned chest. “Next time, I dodge the light.” “Next time, don't get hit,” Pip said. “Great advice.” Mira wrote in her notebook. “Day 177. The Curator came to our home. She hurt Marcus. She showed us her power. We showed her we don't break. She ran. We're going to Wyoming. We'll find her.” Pip read it. “You forgot the part where Leo swung a hammer with a broken arm.” “I'll add it.” Felix played a soft chord. Jenna stayed solid. Kira listened for thoughts. None followed them. Julian closed his eyes. The Curator was out there. Bleeding. Angry. She would come back. But next time, Julian wouldn't defend. He would attack.
