The Echo

They should have been celebrating. Instead, Cross’s tablet flickered and turned back on. “That’s not possible,” he said. One line sat on the screen. ECHO DETECTED. PROTOCOL FRAGMENT SURVIVING. LOCATION: UNKNOWN. Pip dropped his sandwich. “You said it was dead.” “It was.” “Then what is that?” Julian took the tablet. Blue symbols pulsed across the screen. “A backup,” he said. “The Protocol copied itself before we rewrote the core. It’s hiding somewhere.” “Where?” Dara asked. Cross started typing. “Not on any floor. Not on any server.” Rina pushed herself upright. Her face looked pale. “It’s inside one of us.” …. The Infection Nobody spoke. “Explain,” Julian said. “When the core tried to pull people back in,” Rina said, “it sent out fragments. Tiny pieces of code. One of them found a host. One of you.” Marcus took a step back. “Not me. I’ve already had enough code in me for one lifetime.” “It could be any of us,” Cross said. “The fragment stays hidden. It doesn’t show any symptoms until it’s ready to rebuild.” “How do we figure out who has it?” Pip asked. Cross pulled out a small black light. “This reveals Protocol code inside human tissue. Shine it on someone. If they glow blue, they’re the host.” “Then do it,” Dara said. Cross aimed the light at Marcus. Nothing. Then Pip. Nothing. Then Dara. Nothing. Then Rina. Nothing. Then Julian. His whole body lit up blue. …. The Reaction Pip grabbed Julian’s arm. “It’s you?” Julian stared at his glowing hands. “I didn’t feel anything.” “The fragment bonded with your Analyst skills,” Cross said. “It’s using your own abilities to stay hidden. You’re the perfect host.” Dara moved between Julian and Cross. “So what now? You kill him?” “No. But we have to extract the fragment. The only way to do that is to go back into the Protocol.” Marcus stared at him. “We just got out.” “Then stay here. But Julian has seventy-two hours before the fragment rebuilds the core inside his mind. After that, he becomes the new Protocol.” Julian looked at his friends. “Do it,” he said. “Julian,” Pip said. “If I become the Protocol, I’ll hunt everyone. Every player. Every survivor. I won’t be able to stop it.” He looked at Cross. “Where do we go?” Cross pointed at the tablet. “There’s one floor left. Floor Thirteen. Nobody ever finished it. The Protocol hid it because it was unstable. The fragment will feel safe there. It’s the only place left.” “Then let’s go,” Dara said. … Floor Thirteen The portal opened inside the warehouse. Something looked wrong. The portal twisted and glowed red instead of blue. “That’s not good,” Marcus said. “Nothing about this is good,” Cross replied. They stepped through. Floor Thirteen was a hospital. Dark. Abandoned. Hallways stretched in every direction. Empty wheelchairs sat against the walls. Dust covered neatly made beds. “Why a hospital?” Pip asked quietly. “Because the Protocol started here,” Cross said. “The first server sat in a hospital basement. This is how it remembers that place.” A sound came from farther down the hallway. Footsteps. Slow. Heavy. A figure stepped around the corner. It looked like Julian. Something about it felt wrong. Its eyes were completely black. Blue light shone through cracks in its skin. “The fragment,” Cross said. “It’s already building a body.” The false Julian smiled. “You shouldn’t have come back.” “Where’s the real Julian?” Dara demanded. “Inside me. Sleeping. He won’t wake up unless you kill me. But if you kill me, he dies too.” Marcus cracked his knuckles. “Then we’ll knock you out without killing you.” “Try.” …. The Fight Dara attacked first. Her fist punched straight through the false Julian’s chest. No blood came out. Only blue light. “Physical attacks won’t work,” Cross said. “It’s code. You need to overwrite it.” “With what?” Dara asked. “With Julian’s memories. Hit the fragment with so much human experience that it forgets what it is.” Pip stepped forward. “I can do that. Marcus came back because he remembered who he was.” He placed both hands on the false Julian’s face. “Remember Floor Three,” Pip said. “You let me walk with you. You didn’t yell at me when I tried to steal from you.” The false Julian twitched. “Remember the tower. The carvings. Marcus’s name.” Another twitch. “Remember your mom on Floor Seven. She told you to run. You ran. You saved us.” The false Julian screamed. Blue light poured from its mouth. Dara grabbed its arm. “Remember Floor One. You fell into that pit and complained about the stairs. I laughed so hard I almost fell in too.” “Remember the journal,” Marcus said. “It grew with you. You used it to break every rule.” The false Julian dropped to its knees. A voice came from its mouth. Weak. But real. “Pip... your hoodie still smells like Marcus’s cologne.” Pip shouted. “That’s him. That’s really him.” Cracks spread across the false Julian. The blue light faded. Its black eyes turned brown. Julian collapsed onto the floor … The End of the Echo Cross scanned him with the black light. No glow. “It’s gone,” Cross said. “You overwrote it.” Julian opened his eyes. “What happened?” “You almost became a god,” Dara said. “We talked you out of it.” “Was it a good talk?” “The best.” Pip helped Julian to his feet. “No more floors. Promise me.” Julian looked down the hospital hallway. The building was fading. Pieces of it crumbled away. “I promise.” They walked back through the portal. The warehouse stood empty. The sun had climbed higher into the sky. Cross shut his briefcase. “I’m deleting everything. Every backup. Every server. Every line of code.” “Good,” Julian said. Cross stopped at the door. “You saved the world. Twice.” “I had help.” Cross nodded and walked away. The five of them stood in the warehouse. Marcus broke the silence. “So. Pizza?” Pip l aughed. “Yeah. Pizza.” They walked out into the sunlight. No more echoes. Only a quiet Tuesday. And five people who earned it. SYSTEM: PROTOCOL — FINAL TERMINATION CONFIRMED.
