I waited anxiously for the clock to reach 11pm. I gathered my stuff and grabbed my bag and snuck down the hallway. I hadn’t heard any movement in a while so I hoped everyone had gone to bed. I tip toed through the lodge and quickly slipped through the door, being careful to not make a noise. Once outside I began jogging down the driveway and dredged the gate in what seemed like seconds.
Once I reached the gate it was quiet and no one was there. I sat down on a rock bummed that Caleb was no where to be found. I waited about 20 minutes and as I said forget it and went to go back inside I heard a howl. I started looking around and finally my eyes circled in on something as black as the night running towards me. I realized it was Caleb and jogged over to the field across from the driveway. I got undressed and knelt down to shift. To my surprise, it only took a few seconds and the excitement I felt made it less painful.
Once Caleb and I were a few feet away from each other I stopped and allowed him to approach me. We smelled each other for a moment then took off sprinting together in the trees away from anyone who could see us. After what felt like forever we stopped just under this beautiful weeping willow. Caleb shifted back into human form and pulled a bag out from behind the tree and started getting dressed. I just sat and watched as I didn’t have my bag with me. He pulled out a t shirt and some shorts and set them down and turned around to give me some privacy. I quickly shifted back and put the clothes on.
Once I was dressed Caleb turned back around and we took a few moments just looking at each other.
“ I have no idea why I couldn’t stop thinking about you. I wanted to throw the paper with your number on it away but couldn’t bring myself to do it.”
“Well I’m glad you didn’t. I couldn’t stop thinking about you either.” I responded.
“There was just this desire that kept eating at away at me until I messaged you”
I couldn’t lie, I felt the desire too. It was like a ball of fire slowly consuming my whole being. I wanted nothing more than to be closer to him. To touch him and feel the heat of his skin under my finger tips.
He slowly approached me, stopping maybe a foot away. “Can I come closer?” He asked, eagerly. All I could do was shake my head yes while looking into his eyes. He moved closer and put his forehead to mine. He looked into my eyes for a few moments before pulling away. “We- we can’t do this. We could get kicked out of our packs if anyone were to find out.” He paced around for a minute before turning back to look at me. “I don’t want to get anyone in trouble, but for some reason, this, this just feels right. There’s some type of connection that I can’t quite understand.” I said in an almost whiny way. He approached me once again, stopping just inches away from my face. “I know the feeling trust me, but I couldn’t live with myself if I got you thrown out of your pack, away from your family.”
We couldn’t do anything but look at each other for what felt like an eternity, then all of a sudden I felt his hands grab my waist and his lips touch mine at what felt like a million miles an hour. I could’ve sworn real sparks came off of us and I couldn’t think about anything but the sensation of his lips against mine. It was amazing and draining at the same time. He finally pulled back and I whimpered for more. But he just stood silent for a second then the next I knew he shifted back into wolf form and he was gone. I sat confused for a while before deciding he wasn’t coming back and shifted back into my wolf and headed back to my stuff. I put my clothes back on and went drug my feet in disappointment the whole way back up the driveway and into my room.
I tried to message Caleb before I fell asleep but got no response.
I spent the next three days awaiting a message that never came. I was starting to put the thought of Caleb and I into the back of my mind before my father pulled me aside.
“ I know where you were the other night. His scent was all over you. I will tell you why you’re not allowed to see him as long as you promise to stop seeing him.” I just shook my head and waited for him to start talking.
“your great, great, great grandfathers had a pact and promised to protect each others packs. Everyone got along in harmony and they had big parties with both families. One night at a get together, your great, great, great grandmother was attacked by a member of another pack that wanted our family’s riches. Caleb’s grandfather refused to help our family fend off the other pack and after a bloody war with the outside pack, our family vowed to never associate with Caleb’s family ever again. “
I didn’t know what to say. I had lots of questions but couldn’t figure out how to ask any of them. I just shook my head again and went back to my room.
I laid in bed and cried before giving into my thoughts and messaged Caleb “are you awake?”
No response. It wasn’t surprising though. I shrugged it off and watched a little tv before passing out.
I woke up the next morning to a message saying “can I see you tonight?” Butterflies immediately erupted in my stomach but I had to push past them and put my phone away. I couldn’t see him. I couldn’t go against my father’s word.. until I did.
A few weeks and went by and no matter what I did I couldn’t get the thought of Caleb’s lips pressed against mine out of my head. So I messaged him and asked if I could see him. “Give me an hour and meet me at the willow tree”. I got my things together and snuck out of the house again.
