Saira~9

“You can let go.” My words were for the Lycan, as I glared at the old men filing out of the hall. As I expected, they were nothing good. Thankfully, we soon left them behind, and I didn’t need to see their revolting faces anymore. Otherwise, I might’ve just cursed them to drop dead. “Did you have fun degrading yourself?” Idris Raed asked me as he released my hand and scanned my face. “If I degraded myself, I degraded myself for my mate. What reason did you have to stoop to my level?” “Maybe you haven’t noticed, but you are my wife. Your shame is my shame. Your disgrace is my disgrace. In that situation, aside from supporting you, what other choice did I have? It’s not as if condemning you would change your mind.” “Since you know that, why don’t you just divorce me?” “I will not do that, Saira. Not even if you cheat on me.” He snarled. There's no doubt about it. This guy definitely has a screw loose. I sighed. The scene in the Meeting Hall flashed to my mind. Einas Raed didn’t only reject me, he also painted me as a desperate slut before his clan members. His actions were disappointing, insulting even, to say the least. I could tell he had intended to use public pressure to make me accept his rejection. But like Idris Raed, what else could I have done? He was my only choice. The Moon had decreed so. Releasing another frustrated sigh, I asked the Lycan beside me, “Do you have a library in your mansion?” As we strolled out of the palace through the back door into a tropical garden. “I do. Do you want me to give you a tour?” He replied with bright eyes. “No, you can go and do your thing. I’ll find my way around.” I needed to find information on the training of the warriors. Einas Raed’s attitude made it clear he hated my guts. Since he failed to force me into accepting his rejection, I had no doubt he wouldn’t leave any stone unturned to make my life hell and force me to quit the Warrior Squad. Which would be quite shameful, after the ruckus I caused to get in. Therefore, I had to stick out to the end to shut the Lycans up and prove to them that females weren’t weak. For that, I needed information to prepare, and I didn’t trust Idris Raed enough to help me find the necessary information. “Are you sure? I mean, I don’t mind showing you around.” “But I mind you being around me.” That shut the Lycan. An obscure emotion flickered in his eyes. Sadness, defeat, bitterness, I couldn’t tell which one, and truly, I wasn’t interested in finding out. My own heart was weighted down by my mate’s insensitivity and hatred towards me. I didn’t have the energy to care about someone else, especially when that someone was the Lycan forced on me. I looked at the sky. It was almost noon, though a little hard to tell with the murky weather. “Alright, let’s part here.” Bidding the Lycan farewell, I strode out of the tropical garden towards the electrified gate and left the Lycan Leader’s Palace without looking back. I had a task to complete, and I wanted to be done with my research before dinner time. I don’t know if it was just me, but the walk back to the Lycan Heir’s mansion felt a lot longer than when we left for the Lycan Leader’s Palace. Kicking off my winter boots, I searched the entire first floor. Aside from the kitchen and dining hall, there was a sitting room, a game hall, a gym, and servant rooms. The second floor housed our bedrooms, two offices, which I guessed were meant for the Lycan Heir and his Luna to conduct official business, a smaller sitting room with a private kitchen and finally…the library I’d been looking for! “Send some snacks, but don’t disturb me. If your Lycan Heir returns, tell him to have lunch without me.” I told the Omega cleaning the hallway and entered the library. There weren’t many books on the Warrior Training Squad. But the few there were, were comprehensive enough to prepare me for tomorrow. Apparently, the Warrior Training Squad was made of young Lycans pursuing a career in the military, security, or bodyguard profession of the Pacific Sea. Some were following a family tradition, while others were either orphans or the lowest ranking members of the clan who desired to change their fortune by following the Lycan Commander. And those who completed their training would be tested for loyalty, endurance, flexibility and strength by the Former Commander, Current Commander, and Lycan Heir before they could choose their profession according to their performance. I wasn’t joining the training to choose a profession. But skimmed through the training regime anyway. “Hmm…I can do combat and speed, might ace the hunting and tracking. Camouflage…” I couldn’t help but feel weird when I saw this word. Camouflage. Meaning-masking, hiding, blending-fitting in with one’s environment. In the entire werewolf and Lycan community, there wouldn’t be a person who could compete with me on this topic. And if there were, they wouldn’t be werewolves or Lycans. My head began to throb, and my vision blurred. Before I could comprehend what was happening, my surroundings swirled and everything went black. ... “Experiment No. 3102 failed. The vamp baby couldn’t assimilate the werewolf gene.” ... “Experiment No. 5333 failed. The wolf pup turned feral.” ... “Experiment No. 6000 failed. The vampwolf baby ripped through its mother’s womb!” ... “Experiment No. 6120 failed. However, we’ve made a breakthrough! No longer would it be only werewolves siring offsprings. From now on, even vampires will have offsprings of their own blood!” “Get more she-wolves! She-Lycans would be even better! Once we perfect the experiment, no one will be able to stop us! Not even the Lycans! Hahaha!” ... A sharp hiss escaped the gaps of my teeth as I touched my head and winced. “Saira, you’re awake!” Idris Raed cushioned my back and sat beside me with a worried frown. “What happened? You fainted in the library.” “I fainted? How did I faint?” I tried to recall, but couldn’t remember anything. Last I remember, I was reading a book on the Warrior Training Squad. But aside from that...there was nothing about my fainting spell, or why I fainted. I furrowed my brows. There was a nagging feeling in my heart that I was forgetting something very important. An urgent feeling to react to what I saw... But the pounding in my head intensified with my effort to recall, and I crumbled on the pillows in cold sweat. “Relax. The servants told me you skipped lunch. That must be the reason why you fainted.” Idris Raed sighed and grabbed a bowl of soup. I stared at the Lycan as if he was a fool. Even ordinary humans didn’t faint from skipping one meal. I was a damn she-wolf, for goddess’s sake! “Stop making a face and drink the soup. Don’t forget you have training early in the morning tomorrow. If you don’t recover by tonight, I will cancel it!” I bristled at his threat. “You dare!” “Try me.” He said, looking deadly serious for the first time since our forced Bonding Ceremony. I frowned, not liking his attitude. What right did he have to force me to drink the soup? I didn’t like it, and liked him even less. But when I recalled how particular he was about my eating, I sighed in defeat. “Put it down, I’ll drink it myself.” Scooting back to lean against the bedpost, I grabbed the soup, closed my eyes, and gulped it down in one go. “Don’t choke, slow down.” By the time the Lycan reacted to my actions, I had already emptied out the bowl and set it on the bedside table. “Now, can you leave so I can get some rest?” I asked, not bothering to play nice. “Then...you get some rest. Call me if you need anything.” Idris Raed got off the bed and tucked me in, before grabbing the empty bowl. After a brief moment of hesitation, he sighed and left the room. “Goddess, he’s finally gone!” I found a comfortable position and took my phone from the table. There was a message from Sofia. She would arrive a few days before the Moon Dance. I felt both excited and dejected at this. Excited, because I would see my best friend again after an entire month of separation. Dejected, as the reunion would be nothing like the meeting I anticipated I would have with her after finding my mate.
