Chapter 5: Beneath the Surface
The stars watched in silence as Kael led Ariya down the narrow mountain trail.
She wore a thick cloak now, one of his, still smelling faintly of pine and smoke. Her legs trembled with every step, but she didn’t ask to stop. She didn’t need to. Kael was beside her the whole time—always within reach, always aware of her slightest movement.
Their hands didn’t touch.
But something between them did.
> The bond.
It was humming stronger now. With each step into the unknown, it wrapped tighter around her soul like a promise neither of them had made aloud.
They stopped at the edge of a jagged cliff where a black stone door stood half-hidden in moss and silver ivy. Strange symbols glowed faintly in the moonlight.
Ariya looked up at him. “What is this place?”
Kael’s voice was quiet. “Where the truth sleeps.”
He stepped forward and placed his hand against the door. The runes sparked, reacting to his touch. But they didn’t open.
Kael turned to her, something unspoken in his eyes. “Only Moonborn blood can unlock it completely. You have to finish it.”
She hesitated.
He held out his hand.
Ariya stared at it for a moment, then slowly placed hers in his. His fingers wrapped around hers gently—not to possess, but to anchor.
Together, they pressed her palm to the stone.
The instant her skin touched it, the world changed.
A thunderous crack echoed through the cliffs. Light spilled from the runes, washing over them in waves. The vines withdrew. The air thickened.
And the door slowly opened—revealing a staircase descending into the mountain’s heart.
Kael looked at her. “You don’t have to go alone.”
Ariya didn’t let go of his hand. “Then come with me.”

Inside the Sacred Caves
The air was warm and ancient, filled with the scent of earth, herbs, and something metallic—like blood and memory.
Glowing crystals lined the walls, illuminating a path that curved into the darkness.
They walked in silence, deeper and deeper.
Then the path opened into a vast underground chamber.
A pool of silver water shimmered at its center. At the edges stood statues of wolves, their eyes carved from obsidian, each facing the moonlight spilling through a crack in the stone ceiling above.
Ariya felt dizzy.
Kael guided her forward. “This is where the first Moonborn were crowned. Where the Goddess once walked among us.”
She stepped closer to the pool. “What am I supposed to do?”
Kael didn’t answer.
Because the pool did.
The water rippled… then rose. Slowly. Delicately. Forming shapes in midair—swirling images of a silver-haired woman, a baby wrapped in crimson, a m******e, and a crown soaked in blood.
Ariya dropped to her knees.
“I’ve seen her before,” she whispered. “In my dreams. That woman… she’s my mother.”
Kael knelt beside her, placing a steadying hand on her back.
The water stilled.
Ariya’s reflection stared back at her—and for the first time, she saw what Kael had seen all along.
The faint crescent glowing beneath her collarbone.
The silver gleam in her eyes.
The wild power trying to break free.
She wasn’t just anyone.
She was Moonborn.
Ariya reached out and touched the water.
The pool flashed.
And everything around her vanished.

Vision Realm
She stood in a field of moonlight.
Wind whispered across silver grass. The stars pulsed above like heartbeats. And in the distance… a figure walked toward her.
A woman. Elegant. Radiant.
The same one from her visions.
The woman stopped just a few steps away, her voice melodic and aching. “My sweet girl.”
Ariya’s breath caught. “Are you… her?”
The woman nodded. “I am what remains of her. Your mother loved you more than anything, Ariya. She gave everything so you could live.”
Tears welled in Ariya’s eyes. “Why? Why hide me?”
“Because the world feared your blood. Feared what you might become.”
“What am I?”
The woman smiled softly. “You are light. You are storm. You are the balance between fate and fire. And now, your time has come.”
She reached out, pressing a glowing hand over Ariya’s heart.
Pain and warmth exploded in her chest. Not fire this time—but power. Truth.
And her voice echoed in the wind:
> “He is your protector, but you are his strength. You will rise… together.”
Then the vision shattered.

Back in the Cave
Ariya’s eyes flew open.
She gasped as energy surged through her body, every nerve alive and thrumming.
Kael caught her before she collapsed.
Her hands clutched his tunic, her face buried in his chest. “I saw her… my mother. She gave everything for me.”
Kael didn’t speak. He just held her, like she might disappear if he let go.
“You were right,” she whispered. “I’m not human.”
“No,” he murmured. “You’re far more than that.”
She looked up at him, her fingers brushing his jaw. “And you… why do you care so much?”
Kael’s gaze locked on hers. “Because from the moment I saw you, I knew you were mine. And not just because of fate. Not just because of blood.”
He leaned closer, voice barely audible. “But because I chose you.”
Their foreheads touched.
Ariya’s eyes closed.
And when his lips brushed hers—soft, reverent, aching—it felt less like a kiss and more like a vow.
A promise.
That whatever came next, they would face it…
Together.
