Chapter 6: Blood in the Shadows The journey back to the palace was silent. Not because there was nothing to say—but because the weight of what had awakened in Ariya had left them both reeling. Her hand never left Kael’s, their fingers laced tightly together. His grip was strong, steady, as though anchoring her to the world while everything inside her transformed. The cold wind brushed her cheeks, but she didn’t shiver. > She didn’t feel like the same girl anymore. --- Later that Night Ariya stood at the edge of the massive stone balcony outside Kael’s private chambers, wrapped in a cloak too large for her, the stars painting her face in soft silver. She could feel the rhythm of her pulse in her fingertips now—stronger, faster. As if her body was preparing for something it couldn’t quite name. Behind her, Kael approached slowly, barefoot, shirtless, quiet as the moonlight. She didn’t turn around. “Do you miss your old life?” he asked gently. “I think… I miss not knowing.” She glanced over her shoulder, catching the way his muscles moved with every breath. He stood only a few steps behind her now, but the air between them felt fragile. “Now I can’t go back,” she whispered. “No,” Kael said softly. “But I promise… I’ll walk with you wherever this new path leads.” Ariya turned fully to face him. “I don’t know how to be this girl,” she said. “I’m not a warrior. I’m not royalty. I’ve never even fought anyone.” Kael stepped closer. “You don’t have to be any of those things. You just have to be you.” Her breath caught. “Don’t you get it, Ariya? I don’t want a crown. I don’t need a queen at my side. I need you. Your laugh. Your defiance. Your fire.” His voice dropped. “That’s what grounds me.” She blinked, caught off guard by the raw honesty in his tone. “You’re not what I expected, either.” He smiled faintly. “What did you expect?” “Someone cruel. Controlling. Distant.” Kael reached out, brushing a strand of hair behind her ear, letting his fingers linger against her cheek. “I can be cruel,” he said softly. “To those who try to take what’s mine.” Her heartbeat skipped. “And you,” he murmured, “are mine.” This time, she didn’t pull away. When his mouth met hers, it wasn’t fire—it was thunder. Ariya leaned into him as his hands cradled her face, his lips moving with slow reverence, like he’d waited his whole life for this moment. She could feel his restraint—the way he trembled to hold back, to not crush her under the weight of his craving. And she matched him. Hungry. Desperate. Alive. Kael pulled back just enough to press his forehead to hers. “Say it,” he breathed. “What?” “That you feel it too.” She hesitated only a second. “I do.” And those two words snapped something loose between them. Kael lifted her into his arms effortlessly and carried her back inside. No servants. No guards. No witnesses. Just moonlight, heat, and the silence that stretched between heartbeats. They didn’t rush. Because this was more than lust. This was bond. This was belonging. --- Somewhere in the Forest Not far from the palace, black wolves crept through the trees like shadows. Their eyes glowed red with rage and hunger. At their center stood a tall figure cloaked in tattered robes, his face half-burned and twisted with hatred. “She’s inside the Keep,” hissed the rogue alpha. “The last Moonborn. The key.” One of the wolves growled. “The king is with her.” The rogue smiled. “Then we take them both. Kill the king… and break her before she awakens fully.” He lifted a hand—long fingers tipped with claws—and pointed toward the mountains. “Send the crows.” --- At the Palace – Just Before Dawn Ariya stirred in the bed, tangled in sheets and warmth, Kael’s arm heavy around her waist. She could feel his steady breathing, his chest rising behind her, the heat of his body melting into hers. Safety cocooned her, thick and solid. And yet— Something felt… wrong. A prickling against her skin. A whisper she couldn’t hear. She sat up slowly, careful not to wake him. Moonlight had faded. A strange red tint lit the horizon instead. Blood-red. Her breath hitched. She rose, pulling a robe around her, and stepped to the window. And froze. Dozens—maybe hundreds—of black crows circled the skies above the palace, screeching and swirling like a storm with wings. Kael woke instantly. “What is it?” Ariya pointed to the window. Kael was at her side in a blink, his eyes narrowing. His voice turned to steel. “We’re under attack.” --- 🌒 END OF CHAPTER 6
