Chapter 35: A Promise in the Rain

485 Words
Chapter 35: A Promise in the Rain The rain fell softly over Shadowfang. No thunder. No lightning. Just the kind of hush that made the world feel gentler. Ariya slipped from the council chamber without a word, cloak wrapped tight. Her boots sank into soft mud as she walked the edge of the gardens. Where death once grew, now… the smallest green shoots peeked through the soil. She smiled. Not because it was perfect. But because it was trying. --- Kael Finds Her He didn’t call out. He just appeared beside her, his hair soaked, his hands in his coat pockets. “You’re going to get sick,” he said. “So are you.” “Then we’ll be sick together,” he teased. They walked in silence for a while, the kind of silence that didn’t ask for answers. Only presence. --- The Quiet Place They reached the corner of the garden Ariya had claimed weeks ago. A small bench sat beneath an old moon-tree, its white blossoms now damp but blooming. She sat. He joined her. Rain trickled off the leaves above them. “I’ve been thinking,” she said quietly. Kael turned. “Dangerous habit.” She nudged his knee. “I’m serious.” “Alright. What about?” She looked forward, not at him. “What if we weren’t rulers? What if… one day, we just lived? Grew herbs. Raised pups. Woke to sunrise instead of alarms.” Kael’s voice softened. “You want that?” “I want us.” Her throat caught. “After everything, I want something that’s ours. Without war. Without prophecy.” --- His Answer He didn’t rush to respond. Instead, he took her hand, traced the calluses on her fingers with his thumb. “I never wanted a throne,” he said. “I wanted peace. Then I found you—and realized you were peace.” She turned to him, startled. He met her gaze. “So if you want gardens… pups… sunrise kisses… then I say yes. To all of it.” Rain spilled from the branches in heavy drops, but neither of them moved. --- The Kiss Kael leaned forward. Not in passion. In promise. He kissed her slow. Gentle. Not claiming her. Not anchoring her. Just… being with her. And she let herself cry into it—not from sadness, but from hope. --- The Promise That night, by candlelight, she wrote it in her journal: > “I do not know what tomorrow holds. But today, I was loved. And I dared to dream.” --- Far North – A Letter in Flight Across a silver sea, a raven soared. Clutched in its talon: a scroll sealed in wax shaped like a dagger. Its destination: Queen Ariya. Its message: > “The sea is rising. And you are not the only flame reborn.” --- 🌒 END OF CHAPTER 35
