Chapter 22: The First Crack Kael had never raised his voice at her. Until now. --- The Fight “You went to the pool alone?” he growled, pacing across the chamber. “You faced her alone?” “I had to,” Ariya snapped, arms crossed. “You wouldn’t understand—” “I would have tried!” “You’re not the one with a monster in your chest!” Kael froze. Silence hung heavy between them. “I didn’t mean—” she started. But it was too late. He looked at her like she’d just cut him open with words. “You think I don’t have darkness?” he said softly. “You think I haven’t wanted to give in—every time someone threatened you? Every time I watched you suffer?” Ariya's shoulders dropped, guilt rushing in like water. “I just didn’t want you to see what I’m becoming.” Kael stepped forward. “I see you, Ariya. All of you. And I love all of you. But if you keep shutting me out…” He didn’t finish the sentence. He didn’t have to. --- Ariya Alone That night, she sat in the garden ruins, the very spot where he’d once knelt to vow his heart. The moon above her was dim—waning. Like something was pulling it away. She whispered to the wind, “What if I hurt him?” The Other’s voice echoed, not from outside—but from within. > “You already are.” --- Kael’s Doubt In the war chamber, Kael stood alone, hand on the map. His warriors were recovering. The land was still. But the danger had shifted. He looked at the space where Ariya’s name was etched into the bloodlines. The silver thread that bound their souls pulsed faintly. Still connected. But flickering. He whispered into the night, “Don’t let me lose her.” --- Training Begins Lysandra summoned Ariya the next morning. “It’s time,” she said. “No more pretending. No more running.” Ariya nodded. She entered the obsidian circle—the chamber of flame—and began her training. Day after day, she pushed deeper into the fire within. She screamed. She bled. She saw the Other laughing, whispering in her dreams. But she did not break. And every time she wanted to—Kael’s voice returned to her. Not in anger. In love. > "I see you." --- A Letter Unsent Kael wrote her a letter he never sent: > If you lose yourself in the dark, I’ll follow. Not to drag you back. But to hold your hand there—until you remember the light again. I won’t give up. Not even if you do. Because my soul doesn’t know how to live without yours. —K. He sealed it in silver. And waited. --- Far Beyond – The Shadow Stirs The Other, now half-formed, paced in a ruined temple deep underground. She had no name. No heartbeat. But she had Ariya’s face. And soon… she would have her life. --- 🌒 END OF CHAPTER 22
