Chapter 24: The Forgotten Temple
The temple was carved into the cliffs of the eastern range.
No roads led there.
Only whispers.
Ariya and Kael rode through dense fog and winding rock passes. The air grew colder with each mile, but not like winter—it was older than that. A kind of cold that carried memory.
At last, they saw it.
The ruins stood like ribs against the sky. The doors had long since crumbled, vines swallowing stone, but the crescent moon carved above the entry still glowed faintly.
> They had arrived.
---
Inside the Temple
It wasn’t a place of worship.
It was a vault.
As they moved deeper, Ariya could feel the air hum. Kael held her hand, but even he could sense it now—the presence, the watching.
They entered a chamber filled with mirrors. None reflected them.
Only her.
And only the Other.
---
The Trial
A mural stretched across the chamber’s wall. Ariya wiped away dust to reveal it: a figure with two faces—one radiant, one aflame—surrounded by wolves kneeling and kingdoms burning.
Below it, words in Moonborn script:
> “From One, Two.
From Two, a Choice.
One to rule. One to ruin.”
Kael read them aloud.
Ariya swallowed. “So it’s true. The soul-split wasn’t a mistake. It was engineered.”
“Why?” Kael asked.
They turned as a voice answered:
> “Because the gods feared perfection.”
---
The Guardian
An old monk emerged from the shadows, hair silver, robes torn from time.
“I am Thaeos,” he said. “Last Guardian of the Mirror Flame. I have waited centuries for you.”
Ariya’s voice shook. “Waited… for me?”
“For the one who carries both light and destruction in her blood. You are not cursed, child. You are the result of ancient ambition.”
He waved a hand. A hidden panel opened.
Inside: a glowing scroll sealed with both silver and gold.
> “The final truth. Read it, and you will understand why the world must now choose.”
---
The Scroll
Ariya took it. It pulsed in her hands.
As she read, her face paled.
Kael stepped close. “What does it say?”
She looked up, voice barely a whisper:
> “If I don’t unite both halves of myself before the final moon…
The Other won’t just take me.
She’ll become the world’s new queen.”
---
A Choice Approaches
The monk bowed low. “You must not destroy her. You must merge.”
Ariya stared into the flames. “But what if I lose myself?”
Kael took her hand.
“Then I’ll find you.”
---
Far Beyond – The Other Smiles
In a cave lined with black crystal, the Other opened her eyes.
She had seen what Ariya had seen.
And she smiled.
> “Finally. We are ready to meet.”
