Chapter 28: The Bone Heir
The dreams began that night.
Ariya jolted upright in bed, drenched in sweat. Kael stirred beside her but didn’t wake.
She had seen a face.
Familiar.
And wrong.
Eyes the color of coal dust. Markings of fire carved like scars across pale skin. And in his hands, a crown of bones.
> “I’m coming for what’s mine,” he whispered.
---
The Scroll of Secrets
Lysandra appeared at dawn, face grim. “There’s something I must show you.”
They returned to the temple vault. From beneath a hidden floorplate, she pulled a scroll bound in skin—not parchment.
Ariya hesitated. “What is it?”
“The sealed truth,” Lysandra said. “Of the other child.”
Ariya’s heart dropped.
She read the first line aloud:
> “Two born of one fire.
One to lead.
One to devour.”
Her voice broke. “He’s real.”
Lysandra nodded. “Your twin. Sacrificed by the Moonborn to maintain balance. Or so they thought. He survived.”
---
The First Sign
Reports came from the southern border. A village left in ruins, no fire, no blood.
Just bones.
Stripped clean.
Kael paced the war room, fists clenched. “This is no rebellion. This is ancient.”
Ariya stood silent, staring at the map. “He’s not attacking for power.”
“Then what does he want?” Kael asked.
She turned slowly.
> “Me.”
---
The Bone Crown
That night, a messenger arrived at the gates. Dying. Whispers on cracked lips.
He carried only one thing: a gift wrapped in silk.
Ariya unwrapped it.
A crown.
Carved from wolves' skulls and fused with her sigil—burned backward.
Her hand trembled. “He’s challenging me.”
Kael’s jaw tightened. “Then we answer.”
---
Memories Return
Ariya dreamed again.
This time, she saw a cradle beside hers. A baby with eyes like hers—but silent, staring. The nursemaid crying. A priest with shaking hands.
> “He must be taken. The world cannot survive two soulborn.”
The baby screamed once.
Then vanished in light.
But something had gone wrong.
> He lived.
---
In the Shadows – The Heir Speaks
He knelt before a throne of bones, whispering to the dead.
“My sister thinks she is chosen. That she is light.”
He lifted the charred remains of a Moonborn crown.
“She forgets—light casts shadows.”
He rose.
> “And I am the longest one.”
