Chapter 32: Ashes and After

Chapter 32: Ashes and After The battle was over. The realm was quiet. And Ariya didn’t know how to breathe. --- The Scars The Keep still stood, but its walls were cracked. The banners still hung, but they were stained with soot. And her people… they were tired. Alive, yes. Free, yes. But every eye held something heavy. Ariya wandered the garden that morning alone, trailing her fingers through broken rosebushes. Her once-flaming mark had dulled to a soft ember. She didn’t feel like a queen. She felt… hollow. --- Kael Waits He found her under the ash tree. She didn’t look at him. “You should be with the council.” “They can wait.” Silence. Then: “Are you angry?” she asked. He shook his head. “Only at the gods. For making you carry it all.” She finally met his eyes. “I didn’t want to be a weapon anymore.” “You’re not,” he said. “You’re the reason we still have a future.” --- The Small Things In the weeks that followed: Children returned to play in the riverbanks. Markets reopened with food from shared stores. Songs were sung—not of war, but of survival. Kael saw Ariya smile again. Not often. But when she did, it was real. --- The Fire Pit One night, Kael built a small fire for the two of them in the courtyard. No guards. No crowns. Just them. “I still don’t know who I am without the war,” Ariya said softly. He took her hand. “Then let’s figure it out. Together.” She leaned against him, eyes glinting. “I think I’d like to plant a garden.” He laughed. “You? The Flameborn Queen? Planting lilies?” “I’d burn half of them accidentally,” she teased. “But you’d still try,” he said, brushing a kiss against her temple. > “And that’s why I love you.” --- The Letter A messenger arrived with a sealed scroll days later—old parchment, gold ink. A summons. From the High Temple of Light. Requesting Ariya’s presence for a ceremony never performed before. > To honor a queen who broke fate—and still chose to build. --- 🌒 END OF CHAPTER 32
