Chapter 12: Fire Beneath Silk

722 Words
Chapter 12: Fire Beneath Silk The last toast of the night was about to begin. Ariya stood beside Kael at the top of the ballroom steps, surrounded by nobles and alphas, all holding crystal goblets of dark wine. The air buzzed with tension disguised as celebration. Kael's voice rang out, smooth and commanding. “To the future of peace between our packs. To unity beneath the blood moon.” The guests raised their goblets. Ariya lifted hers slowly. The silver pendant at her throat pulsed once—then again, faster. > Warning. She caught it out of the corner of her eye—a flick of movement by the pillar. A figure in servant’s garb, steps too careful. Too calculated. One hand hidden in their folds of fabric. A dagger gleamed. Ariya didn’t think—she moved. She dropped her goblet, the crash silencing the room. “Kael—!” The assassin lunged from the crowd. The blade was aimed at Kael’s heart. Ariya slammed into him, twisting, placing her body between his and the oncoming strike. But before the steel could pierce her— > BOOM. A shockwave of silverfire erupted from her skin. The ballroom exploded into chaos. The assassin was hurled back across the floor, crashing into a marble pillar that cracked from the impact. The dagger clattered uselessly at his side, seared black. The flames didn’t stop there. They danced from Ariya’s fingertips, licking across the floor, rising like a wall between her and the stunned crowd. Kael grabbed her, spinning her into his arms. “Are you hurt?” “No,” she breathed. “But I’m done being hunted.” She stepped forward, eyes glowing silver, her aura crackling like lightning caught in a storm. “Who sent you?” she demanded. The assassin coughed blood but sneered. “Long live the Northern Queen.” That was all she needed. The flames coiled around him like snakes—then extinguished without touch. The crowd was dead silent. Kael’s voice boomed. “Guards—lock down the gates. No one leaves until we know who allowed this traitor inside.” Ariya turned to face the court, her voice sharp. “This is not a game. I am not a pawn. If you stand with me, speak now.” A few alphas stepped forward, bowing low. “We stand with the Moonborn Queen.” Others hesitated. Ariya didn’t wait for all of them. She walked straight to Kael, her back straight, fire still glowing under her skin. He met her gaze, proud. Fierce. And then he did something unexpected. He dropped to one knee. “Ariya of Fire and Moon,” he said clearly, for all to hear. “You are not just my mate. You are my Queen. My equal. And I would burn kingdoms to protect you.” The court gasped. Ariya blinked, stunned—but her heart soared. Then she did the only thing she could: she pulled him up and kissed him, right there, in front of everyone. Fire crackled beneath their skin. Power hummed in the floor. The court didn’t know whether to bow… or run. --- Later That Night The halls were empty. The fires low. Ariya sat before the mirror, her reflection showing a girl covered in moonfire and ash… and strength. Kael entered behind her. “You scared them,” he said. “Good.” He smiled, kneeling behind her, resting his chin on her shoulder. “You scared me too.” She turned to look at him. “Why?” “Because now they’ll come for you harder. And I don’t know if I can stop them all.” She kissed him, slow and deep. “Then teach me to stop them myself.” He wrapped his arms around her. > “Together.” --- Far North – In Mairead’s Temple The mirror cracked as she watched the kiss. Queen Mairead’s smile was sharp as broken ice. “She’s stronger than I thought.” Her advisor stepped forward. “Shall we send another assassin?” “No,” Mairead purred. “Let them prepare. Let her believe she’s ready.” She turned to the war map on the floor—lit with blue fire. “Then we drown them in blood.” --- 🌒 END OF CHAPTER 12
