Chapter 14: The First Siege The alarm bells rang before dawn. A low, rolling clang that turned dreams into dust. Kael was already out of bed, grabbing his tunic and sword before the second bell struck. Ariya jolted upright, senses flaring. Cold. Death. Smoke. She threw on her cloak and ran beside him through the halls. A guard met them at the war room doors. “My king—Queen—three villages under Shadowfang’s protection are burning. Mairead’s forces are moving in from the northern forests.” Kael’s fists clenched. “She’s testing our reach. Seeing how fast we respond.” Ariya’s jaw tightened. “Then we’ll show her.” --- The War Table Maps were spread across the table, markers shifting as messages flew in via hawks and flame signals. “She sent not wolves,” Kael muttered, “but icebeasts. Constructs made of magic and snow.” “They don’t bleed,” Ariya said softly. “They don’t feel.” “Exactly,” Kael said. “We can’t win this with brute force alone.” He looked to her. “She wants you to act. To reveal yourself. Don’t give her that.” “I already have,” Ariya replied. “But I’m not hiding anymore.” She looked at the map, then traced her finger across a village called Elderhollow. “This one hasn’t fallen yet. Let me go there.” Kael stiffened. “Alone?” “Not alone. Just… not sheltered.” Kael’s eyes searched hers. “You’re serious.” She nodded. “Let me protect what I’m meant to protect.” --- Elderhollow – Hours Later The village sat in a clearing of frostbitten trees, smoke rising from burned huts. Dozens of Shadowfang warriors were holding the line, barely. And then—she arrived. Ariya stepped off the transport wolf with a swirl of silver and heat. Her cloak flared behind her like wings. Her palms glowed with light. A scream rang out as one of the icebeasts lunged at a child— Ariya raised her hand. A bolt of silverfire arced through the air, piercing the monster in one blinding strike. The creature burst into snow. The village froze. Ariya turned to the people. “This land is ours. Stand. Fight.” Their courage reignited like sparks to kindling. And Ariya led them into the fire. --- The Battle She moved like moonlight. Where the beasts struck, she struck harder. Where the villagers faltered, she raised them. Her fire didn’t just burn—it blessed. It shielded those she touched. Her power spread like a web of warmth through the town. And when the largest beast arrived—a ten-foot monster of ice and ash, eyes glowing blue— Ariya didn’t flinch. She stepped forward, raised her blade, and whispered: > “You don’t belong here.” She stabbed the dagger Lysandra had gifted her directly into the beast’s chest. The magic pulsed out in a ring of silver light. > BOOM. The creature shattered into frozen dust. Silence followed. Then—cheers. Howls. Tears. Elderhollow had survived. --- Later That Night Kael arrived as the fires were dying down, galloping in on his black wolf. He dismounted before the guards could even speak and sprinted through the village. He found her by the well, washing blood from her hands. She turned. He stopped. Not because of the blood. But because she looked like a goddess. Crowned in silver ash. Eyes glowing faint. Worn, but standing tall. He pulled her into his arms without a word, holding her tighter than he ever had. “You did it,” he whispered. Ariya rested her head on his chest. “We did it.” He kissed the top of her head, voice low. > “She’s going to come harder next time.” “I know.” He pulled back, just enough to meet her gaze. “But so will we.” --- Far North – Wintergrave Citadel Queen Mairead stared at the mirror, watching Elderhollow burn… then survive. She turned away, face blank. “Prepare the shades,” she whispered. “And wake the frost wolves.” One of her generals paled. “That’s forbidden—” “I am the law now,” she snapped. Then smiled. “And it’s time to make her bleed.” --- 🌒 END OF CHAPTER 14
