Margot was speechless.
Such a perfectly crafted, flawless logical mind clearly wasn't inherited from her.
She glanced at Cassian out of the corner of her eye. His face wore the same look of shock, as though he'd been struck by lightning.
Cassian pressed his fingers to his forehead, feeling a headache coming on. "Who taught you to use that phrase frustrated like this?"
Toby, completely ignoring him, rolled off the bed and crawled over to Margot, pressing his chubby little face into hers. "I don't care! I want a kiss too!"
Margot, at a loss, leaned down and planted a quick kiss on Toby's cheek. "Is that good enough?"
Satisfied, Toby didn't pull away, instead clinging to her neck like a little koala and pouting. "Mommy, can you take me to school today?"
It was just a simple school drop-off, but Margot instinctively started to agree.
Before she could respond, Cassian interrupted, "No. Mommy has something else to handle I'll have the driver take you."
Toby puffed out his cheeks, looking like an angry pufferfish. "Daddy's so annoying! Always stealing Mommy away!"
Margot gently patted Toby's little head, her voice softening unconsciously. "Alright, how about this? The driver will take you today, and I'll pick you up this evening, okay?"
It was clear Toby was far more inclined to listen to Margot than Cassian.
Toby bounced off to change his clothes.
Margot exhaled in relief.
Maybe it was just the natural bond of blood, but when it came to Toby, Margot didn't find him as difficult to handle as she had imagined.
In fact, it felt much easier than dealing with Cassian.
Thinking of Cassian, she felt her headache flare up again.
She was wrapped in nothing but a thin blanket, with nothing else underneath.
The scene in the room—the disarray of sheets—spoke volumes about just how intense things had been between her and Cassian last night.
But they were married for seven years and had a child... Was she still that damn horny?
Toby's earlier comment about being "frustrated" echoed in her mind, and Margot felt her cheeks heat up.
She turned to Cassian and awkwardly suggested, "How about you go take a shower for a while? I'll get dressed."
Cassian's gaze darkened.
In his mind, Margot had always been his nephew's fiancée, and they'd only met once or twice.
He didn't know her well, but he'd heard bits and pieces about her past. It was almost unbelievable to think that, seven years later, they now had this kind of relationship.
He grabbed his phone, stood up, and walked into the bathroom.
Margot opened the closet, her eyes falling on the neat rows of Cassian's suits and shirts. For a moment, a wave of confusion washed over her. That thought flashed in her mind again.
Had she really... married Cassian?
Even if she had ended things with Lucas, there was no way she would have married his uncle.
Margot pushed the chaotic thoughts aside, grabbed a random outfit, and quickly changed. She knocked on the bathroom door.
Half an hour later, she and Cassian were both ready. They sat down in the living room, phones in front of them.
Cassian glanced down, flipping through his text messages, quickly processing the information they had. "We've been married for seven years, and you were pregnant with Toby before we got married."
"We'll figure out what happened over these seven years later," he added calmly.
"For now, the most important thing is to maintain the appearance of a happy marriage in front of others. We can't let any cracks show."
Margot nodded eagerly. "Right, of course."
Given Cassian's position, if their marriage appeared to be in trouble, it would cause turmoil with his assets. Company shares would be redistributed, and in the worst-case scenario, the stock price would take a hit.
And if people discovered that she and Cassian were actually from seven years ago, completely out of sync with the current time, who knew what kind of trouble it could cause?
The doorbell suddenly rang, and it was Cassian's assistant, Levi Brooks.
"Morning, Mr. Vale, Mrs. Vale," Levi said politely, nodding at Margot as he handed her a velvet-red box.
"The gift for Mrs. Rosewood's birthday is ready. Please have a look and let me know if it's satisfactory."
Margot froze for a moment, and a wave of bittersweet emotion swept over her.
That was right, today was her mother Evelyn Rosewood's birthday.
Margot's situation was awkward. She wasn't the real daughter of her parents.
When Margot was nineteen, the real daughter, Sierra Rosewood, showed up with a paternity test and claimed her rightful place. Margot had been the result of a hospital mix-up, and she had ended up living Sierra's life for the past nineteen years.
Originally, once Sierra returned, everything should have gone back to where it belonged. But Margot had spent so many years with the Rosewood couple, and her biological mother had passed away. So, in the end, Margot stayed.
She had told herself countless times that the Rosewood couple had raised her, spoiled her, and given her a life of comfort. She shouldn't ask for more. But she was only human, and there were times when she couldn't help but feel a pang of bitterness.
"Margot."
The deep, cold voice of Cassian snapped her back to reality. Margot looked up, only to realize both Cassian and Levi were staring at her.
Her heart skipped a beat, and her nerves instantly tensed.
