‘Oh, wow. That’s pretty. Is it new?’
Lillian had just returned from her father’s, and was emptying her overnight bag on the kitchen table when she glanced up and noticed Esme’s necklace.
‘Uh … sort of.’
Lillian threw her an enquiring look.
‘I found a receipt for it, in with my mum’s things. So I went to the address, a place in Sofia Square, and the shop still had it.’
She unhooked the chain, and spilled it into Lillian’s outstretched hand.
‘Mum used to have one just like it … I was always asking her to get me one.’ She swallowed and shifted her gaze to the patterned tiles on the kitchen floor. ‘I guess she was thinking of me, even then.’
Lillian squeezed her arm in sympathy. ‘Of course she was.’
‘Something else happened too, on the way there. Someone—’
