I woke to the harsh buzz of my phone vibrating against the metal hospital tray. The screen lit up the darkened room, Sherman 's name glowing across it, and a time that made my stomach drop : 2 :17 a.m.
My heart kicked hard in my chest as I fumbled to answer.
"Sherman ? What's going on ?"
His voice came through tight and controlled, but I caught the edge of panic underneath.
"It's Orion. He's got a 103.5 fever and it's climbing fast."
I shot upright, fully awake.
Keal stirred beneath my skin, her maternal instinct rising like a flood.
"What happened ?" I asked, already on my feet, pacing the cramped hospital suite.
"He was fine at bedtime," Sherman said, his voice strained. I heard something shifting in the background.
" Then he woke up crying for you.
