First Morning

1464 Words
Alexander's first morning in the new world arrives early. The sun is just beginning to rise as Alexander wakes up, and he can feel a strange heaviness in his limbs from walking a lot of hours ago. The mattress under him is soft, but not enough for him to be comfortable. And then there’s the blanket on top of him, heavy but cool to the touch. He shivers under it. The cold is so unlike what he remembers being used to; he feels almost entirely numb. But still, he wants to get out. He needs some fresh air. He rose to his feet and opened the window, breathing in the crisp winter air that blows across his face. The sky is still dark, with only an occasional streak or few clouds passing across. It’s quiet outside; the only sounds he hears are the wind rushing through the trees and the faint hum of cicadas that comes from nearby. A few birds fly by overhead. Alexander closes his eyes and listens. "This is peace," he uttered to himself. Compared to his original world, Alexander is often welcomed by the blaring noise of traffic outside his house, loud voices, and even more noisy noises inside his own apartment building. Even though his world was a mess, Alexander has never found any peace there. In this new world where everything seems so much quieter yet somehow no less chaotic than the old one—he has a feeling that there might not be peace in the future, either. After all, this world is from a game he was playing before he died. Since the story ended, there's no telling what the future holds. He can only live on hope for now. There is something else that draws Alexander away, however. As dawn approaches, Alexander can see a small light coming from somewhere above the horizon. It isn't long before he recognizes it as the sunrise. "Okay...time to work," Alexander cracked his knuckles and started to get ready for the day. As a butler of Natalie Belfast, Alexander must wake earlier than his boss. He closed the window and exited his room. He took a shower, got dressed, and found a note in the living room. Alexander picked it up to see what it said. It was written in Natalie's elegant handwriting and he could smell the scent of lavender perfume from the letter. "Under this note, you'll find 200 florins, use that to buy breakfast for the both of us. You can cook whatever you want since I'm not picky. As long as it tastes delicious, it will do," Alexander read. When he put the note back down to where he got it, he picked the 200 florins that came in a coin. After getting it, Alexander made his way to the exit. The morning breeze blew against his skin, bringing a slight chill along with it. It tickled his nose gently. As if noticing the warmth radiating off of him, the cicada stopped their chirping. Only a couple people were walkingof people walking around the streets, and most didn't even bother looking at him. Well, not that Alexander cared about their attention, in fact, he liked it when no one paid attention to him. Since the market is about a fifteen-minute walk, Alexander decided to get there as fast as he could by jogging. It's a great exercise to keep his mind busy, which is what Alexander needed for today. Seven minutes later, he reached the place without having to stop and breathe. When he arrived and looked at what was in front of him—a meat vendor selling various raw meats—he couldn't help but stare. He snapped himself out of his reverie and began pondering what breakfast he should cook for today. Well, usually, Alexander would prefer eating something soft, something that is not heavy in the stomach. He remembered the time when his stomach got technical difficulties. But since this is a new world and no school, Alexander decided to cook something heavy. Since he doesn't know what kind of food Natalie eats, not even mentioned in the game, he can pretty much choose whatever he wants. He walked over to the meat vendor who greeted him with a smile. "How can I help you?" the meat vendor asked. "Well, I'd like to buy bacon, do you have one?" Alexander asked him politely. He felt a bit nervous since this was his first time buying in another world. "Ah yes! Here you go!" The butcher handed him a package with a slice of bacon inside. "How much is it?" Alexander asked again. The meat merchant smiled and answered "30 florins." "Okay, I'll take it," Alexander put his hand in his pocket to retrieve the coins. He counted it carefully. 30 florins. "Here you go." Alexander handed the meat seller the money. He thanked him and placed the package on a tray, then proceeded to make his way to the next stall. "I need to buy flour, eggs, and potatoes to complete the breakfast set." With that in mind, Alexander continued making his way through the market, picking up ingredients for breakfast. It cost him a total of 45 florins, which he must say, affordable. Now that he had the ingredients, Alexander returned back to the estate to prepare the breakfast. He hoped Natalie was sleeping so that he could surprise her. As he returned to the estate, Alexander wasted no time and got to the kitchen and started preparing the meal. The sizzling sound of the bacon being cooked filled the air, and soon enough, Alexander had prepared all the ingredients required to make a simple, hearty, yet also delicious breakfast. Thirty minutes later, it was all ready. As Alexander was preparing the dishes on the table, a lady walked down the stairs groggily. "Good morning, Alexander," Natalie said as she rubbed her eyes. "Good morning, I've prepared breakfast, please take a seat," Alexander replied as he placed the plates on the table. Natalie sat down and scanned the dishes on the table. "What is this?" "It's my special breakfast, I call it Alexander's breakfast!" Alexander revealed childishly, causing Natalie to let out a soft chuckle. Well, actually, the dish he prepared is called American breakfast. Which is just fried bacon, eggs, hashbrown, and a pancake. "I've never seen such a dish before but it looks yummy," Natalie commented and immediately ate her breakfast. "Yes, this is one of my favorite dishes," Alexander smiled. "I hope you like it. As Natalie took a bite, she sighed contently. "Oh, it tastes so good!" "I'm honored," Alexander bowed. "You do have a talent in cooking." "Thank you, Ms. Natalie," "Just call me Natalie!" She waved her hand dismissively. Alexander chuckled "okay." The two continued to eat breakfast as they talked and laughed together. Soon enough, Alexander finished washing his dishes, dried his hands, and went out with Natalie. He followed closely behind her. When they arrived at the garden, Alexander noticed the other servants already starting to wake up and start doing their duties, so he excused himself and ran upstairs. When he reached his bedroom, he took a quick shower and changed into clean clothes, then hurried downstairs. "What should I do next, Natalie?" "Well, for starters, I want you to water the lawn," Natalie ordered, gesturing toward the garden. "Then we'll start with the flowers," "Understood!" Alexander acknowledged the order as if he was a soldier. He prepared his watering can and then watered the flowers that are near to withering. After watering the plants, he set the watering can down and began planning his next move. The grass is all withered, it'll be best to remove it and grow a new one. With that, Alexander grabbed a pair of scissors and began pruning the grass. After a few minutes of working, he managed to trim up the entire lawn. Once everything was trimmed up nicely, he placed it back inside the grass bed, then turned and left the garden to return back to the estate. "I'm done, Natalie," Alexander announced, breathing heavily and sweating profusely. "Very well then," Natalie stood up and headed towards the door, "Next, you must clean everything in the house," Natalie ordered. "Understood!" Alexander replied enthusiastically and began cleaning everything. From dusting to mopping the floors to washing the windows to wiping down every inch of furniture, every corner, every nook, and cranny. He cleaned the whole house until all the walls, floors, and tables were shining with freshness and beauty. Soon after, he was done and waited patiently at the entrance of the estate. "You're so efficient, Alexander. You just finished your work for the morning, you may now rest," Natalie said. "Thank you, Natalie."
