The Secret

I stared at him, waiting for an answer. “What happened between you and Maya?” He looked away. For the first time since I'd met him, he didn't have a joke or a teasing comment ready. “I don't know how to explain it.” “Then try.” He took a deep breath. “Maya and I were together for almost a year.” I swallowed. “Okay…” “We were close. I trusted her with everything.” “What changed?” “She lied to me.” I frowned. “About what?” He was silent for a moment. “She was talking to someone else behind my back.” My heart sank. “I found out from someone else. When I confronted her, she denied it at first. Eventually, she admitted it.” I didn't know what to say. “That must have hurt.” “It did.” He looked at me. “But that's not even the worst part.” I waited. “She told people things about me that weren't true. She made it seem like I was the one who had betrayed her.” “So everyone believed her?” “Almost everyone.” I felt sorry for him. “I'm sorry.” He gave me a small smile. “That's why I didn't want to tell you. I didn't want you to think I was still stuck in the past.” “I don't think that.” He looked relieved. Then I asked the question that had been bothering me. “Then why did she come back?” “I don't know.” Before he could say anything else, my phone buzzed. I looked at the screen. Unknown Number. I opened the message. > You really trust him that easily? My stomach dropped. Another message appeared. > Ask him what happened the night we broke up. I slowly looked up at him. “Who is that?” He looked at my phone. His expression changed immediately. “Maya.” I stared at him. “How did she get my number?” He didn't answer. Another message came through. > He hasn't told you everything. I felt a cold feeling in my chest. “Tell me the truth.” “I am.” “No. You're not.” He stepped closer. “I swear I am.” “Then what happened that night?” He froze. I knew immediately. There was something. Something he hadn't told me. “Please,” I whispered. “Just tell me.” He looked down. “That night… Maya came to my house.” “And?” “We argued.” “About what?” “She didn't want our relationship to end.” I waited. Then he said quietly, “She threatened to hurt herself if I left her.” I covered my mouth. “What?” “I was scared. I didn't know what to do. I stayed until she calmed down.” I looked at him differently. “Why didn't you tell anyone?” “I was embarrassed. I thought people would judge me.” I reached for his hand. He held it tightly. “I should have told you,” he whispered. “Yes. You should have.” “I was afraid you'd leave.” I looked into his eyes. “I don't want you to hide things from me.” “I won't.” For a moment, everything was quiet. Then my phone buzzed again. I looked down. Another message. > There's more. I looked at him. He saw the message too. His face went pale. “What does she want?” I asked. He shook his head. “I don't know.” But deep down, I knew. Whatever Maya was hiding… She wasn't finished. And neither was the past. Because sometimes, the truth doesn't destroy a relationship all at once. Sometimes, it comes in pieces. One secret. One lie. One message at a time. And I was beginning to wonder if I really knew the boy I was falling for.
