Chapter 7

Hazel’s POV It’s been a week since I started working at Volz Ltd. Honestly, it has been exhausting. Every single day, I draft correspondence, organize documents, manage office supplies, schedule appointments, and answer endless calls and inquiries from visitors. Meanwhile, Kayla does absolutely nothing except order me around, complain, and pick fights with me over every little thing. But lately, I have noticed something very strange about her. Almost every day, she suddenly disappears from the office for nearly an hour. Then she comes back looking completely different. Her lipstick is always smudged, her makeup messy, and her clothes look wrinkled like someone had grabbed and pulled at them. Sometimes her hair is untidy too, and she walks back into the office looking exhausted, breathing heavily as though she had just finished running a marathon. At first, I ignored it. But deep down, something about it never felt right. I honestly don’t know what Jason’s family sees in her. She is rude, arrogant, lazy, materialistic, and completely obsessed with money. And somehow… Jason still defends her. I barely even see him these days because he is always busy with work. A small part of me feels hurt about it too. He hardly checks on me anymore, and it feels like he completely forgot about me after that day in his office. Jessica has been really sweet to me though. She checks on me often and makes sure I’m okay. But then there is Chloe. The moment Jessica introduced her best friend Chloe to me, I disliked her immediately. I don’t even know why. Whatever the reason is… she irritates me badly and she seems so untrustworthy. Sandra travelled out of the country for an important business meeting representing Volz Company, and ever since she left, I have been completely lonely. I eat alone. Sleep alone. Cry alone. Sometimes at night, I just sit quietly and cry because I feel forgotten. Even Jason barely talks to me anymore. “Get those stupid thoughts out of your head, Hazel!” Kayla’s harsh voice snapped me back to reality instantly. “Yes, Ma’am,” I answered quietly. “Instead of sitting there daydreaming, you should be working,” she snapped. “Anyway, I’m leaving now. I’ll be back soon.” “Alright,” I replied flatly. “And don’t you dare tell anybody where I went,” she warned sharply. “Sure. Since that’s exactly what you always say,” I muttered under my breath. “Take care of everything while I’m gone,” she continued. “And if Jason asks for me, call me immediately.” “Fine. I heard you.” She hissed and stormed out of the office dramatically. The moment the door shut, I let out a long, tired sigh. Just then, the telephone on my desk rang loudly. I picked it up quickly. “Hello, this is the Assistant Secretary of Volz Limited speaking. How may I help you?” A calm, elegant female voice responded. “I am Jason’s mother. Kindly inform him that I’ll be coming over to his office shortly.” My eyes widened instantly. “Mum?!” I blurted out in shock, completely forgetting all formalities. “I beg your pardon?” she asked, sounding confused. “I—I mean… yes, Ma’am,” I corrected myself quickly. There was a brief silence. Then suddenly— “Wait… Hazel? Is that you?” Tears immediately filled my eyes. “Yes, Mum,” I whispered softly. “It’s really me.” Her tone immediately changed. “Don’t play with my emotions, young lady. Hazel Allen is not even in this country.” “But Mum, it’s really me,” I said emotionally. “Your only daughter. The one you always scolded for refusing to call you ‘Mummy’ properly.” There was a sharp gasp from the other side. “Oh my goodness… Hazel?!” “Yes, Mum.” “When did you come back? Why are you working there?” she asked emotionally. “Mum, calm down,” I said softly. “Sandra helped me get this job.” “Oh Hazel… my poor child. You’ve been through so much, haven’t you?” Her voice alone almost made me cry again. “I’m coming to see you immediately,” she said firmly. “Then buy me something nice on your way,” I replied playfully. She laughed softly. “I definitely will.” After ending the call, I immediately dialed Jason’s office line. “Yes?” he answered professionally. “Your mother just called. She’s coming over right now.” “Okay,” he replied calmly. Then his tone softened immediately. “How are you doing, Hazel?” “I’m fine,” I lied quietly. “You don’t sound fine,” he said gently. “Come to my office right now.” “I can’t leave the desk. Kayla isn’t even around.” “I don’t care. Come now.” And then he ended the call. I sighed heavily and stood up slowly. Of course he would insist. As I walked down the hallway toward his office, I suddenly realized how unusually quiet the building felt. Then I remembered. It was lunchtime. That was when I heard strange muffled noises coming from Paul’s office. At first, I ignored it. But then I heard it again. Soft moans. Whispers. Heavy breathing. Confused, I slowly walked toward the door. It was slightly open. Carefully, I pushed it wider and peeked inside. And immediately— I froze. My entire body went cold. Right there, sitting on top of Paul’s office desk, was Kayla. Jason’s future wife. Her skirt was pushed high up her thighs while Paul stood between her legs, gripping her tightly against him. They were kissing hungrily like two people completely consumed by each other. Paul’s hands roamed shamelessly all over her body while Kayla wrapped her arms around his neck, pulling him even closer. “Paul…” she moaned breathlessly. He kissed her neck roughly while his hands squeezed her waist possessively. “You’re driving me crazy,” he muttered against her skin. Kayla laughed softly before pulling him back for another desperate kiss. My stomach turned in disgust. So this was where she disappeared to every day. This was the secret. She was cheating on Jason. With his own best friend. And the worst part? Jason trusted both of them completely. I quietly stepped away from the door before they noticed me, my hands trembling with anger and disbelief. I honestly felt sick. Without wasting another second, I hurried toward Jason’s office.
