Chapter 2

A while later, Jessica went to Hazel’s room and saw her listening to music with headphones on. She gently pulled them off. “Jessica! You scared me half to death!” Hazel exclaimed. “Sorry… I didn’t mean to startle you. I’m leaving already anyway,” Jessica said softly. “So soon?” “Yes. And sorry I didn’t chat properly earlier.” “Don’t worry about that,” Hazel smiled. “Can we exchange contacts?” “I already have your number. Sandra gave it to me earlier.” “Oh… right.” “Yes. See you some other time then… bye.” “Bye, Jessica.” Jessica left, and Hazel immediately went to meet Sandra. “Sandra… what exactly did you tell her about me?” Hazel demanded. “Nothing serious. Volz Company needs a new assistant secretary, and I was told to look for someone suitable,” Sandra replied. “Wait… are you working for them now?” Hazel asked. “Yes.” “Seriously? Mum and Dad invested heavily in that company, yet instead of helping the family business, you are helping another company grow bigger?” Hazel complained. “Hazel… I’m really tired right now,” Sandra sighed. Hazel rolled her eyes and walked away. The Next Morning “Hazel! I’m leaving for work now…” Sandra called out before freezing in shock. “What is all this?” “Morning sis,” Hazel grinned. “Muffins, burgers, fries, pizza, smoothies… Hazel, are you planning to feed a whole village?” Sandra laughed. “What? I came to America to relax and enjoy myself,” Hazel replied proudly. Sandra shook her head. “I’ll see you later.” “Bring me something nice when you get back!” “No I won’t!” “Yes you will!” Hazel shouted dramatically. Later That Evening Knock knock! “I’m coming!” Hazel opened the door. “Welcome home! Did you get me anything?” “Hazel please… I’m exhausted,” Sandra groaned. “You look stressed.” “Maybe because I work all day while somebody stays at home eating and sleeping.” “Whatever,” Hazel rolled her eyes. “Go get us pizza and drinks from the shop.” “Why me?” “Because you literally do nothing else.” Hazel sighed loudly. “Fine. Give me money.” “Pay first. I’ll refund you later.” “You’re definitely lying.” “I’m not!” Sandra laughed. After a while, Hazel returned with the food. While eating, she noticed Sandra looked distracted. “You okay?” Hazel asked. Sandra sighed. “My boss gave me until tomorrow to find a suitable assistant secretary for him.” “Then promote someone inside the company.” “He doesn’t trust anyone there.” “He already has a secretary. Why does he need another one?” “He’s dating his secretary,” Sandra replied. “Oh… now I understand.” Sandra nodded. “Her workload became too much, so now he wants an assistant secretary.” “Then find somebody else.” “He wants someone exactly like her. Someone he can trust.” “Well… good luck with that,” Hazel teased. Sandra looked at her carefully. “Actually… somebody suggested you.” Hazel nearly choked on her drink. “Sorry?!” “You should be the assistant secretary.” “That is impossible,” Hazel laughed. “Hazel, you need to work instead of staying home all day.” “I came here for a holiday, not office work.” “Well… I’m going to tell my boss I found the perfect person.” “And who is that?” “You.” “Keep dreaming,” Hazel said, walking away. The Next Day “Hazel… I’m leaving for work,” Sandra said. “Bye. And why were you in my room last night?” Hazel asked suspiciously. “I was arranging your documents. You’re going for an interview tomorrow.” “Keep dreaming, Sandra.” After Sandra left, Hazel muttered to herself, “I would rather leave this house than work for that rude man.” Later that afternoon, there was a knock on the door. “I’m coming!” Hazel opened the door and smiled brightly. “Jessica!” Jessica hugged her warmly. “Hi Hazel! I missed you.” “Come in.” Jessica sat down. “I came to congratulate you.” “Congratulate me for what?” “You are officially the new Assistant Secretary of Volz Company.” Hazel froze. “Excuse me?!” “Didn’t you check your email?” Jessica asked. “I didn’t…” “We already sent you a congratulatory message. Your sister submitted all your documents herself.” Hazel’s eyes widened. “She searched through my things while I was sleeping?” Jessica nodded. “And there’s no going back now.” “But I don’t want this!” Hazel protested. “Then prepare to be dragged to work by security men,” Jessica said calmly. “Jessica… I’m too young for this stress.” “And I’m too old for your excuses,” Jessica replied. Just then, Sandra walked in. “What exactly did you do?” Hazel demanded. “I officially made you the assistant secretary,” Sandra announced proudly. “Sandra!!” Hazel shouted. “You need this job, Hazel.” “I will never work there!” “Then get ready to be carried there,” Sandra replied. Jessica laughed. “Let’s just celebrate your new position.” “Celebrate what exactly?” Hazel frowned. “Your new work, of course.” Hazel grabbed her bag angrily. “Where are you going?” Sandra asked. “I’m leaving this place forever!” “Bye then,” Jessica said casually. A few minutes later, Hazel stormed back into the house looking furious. “I told you so,” Jessica laughed. Hazel hissed in frustration while both ladies burst into laughter. Hazel sat down heavily and glared at Sandra. “This is not fair.” “That’s life,” Sandra replied calmly. Jessica stood up. “Well, I’ll see you tomorrow, Miss Assistant Secretary.” “You all think this is funny, but I’m never working there,” Hazel muttered. “Bye Sandra… bye Hazel,” Jessica said, pecking Hazel on the cheek.
