It had been hours since Andrew had come down here. Not that I had any way of keeping track, but it had to have been more than just hours since they took me. I refused their food and the dirty water they had brought me.
Still I did have to pee.
So I pulled myself together and mustered up the sweetest voice I could find sitting there on the cold concrete floor.
“I need to use the bathroom.”
Mike looked at me and shook his head. He pointed to a bucket near the corner of the cell. Just far enough to pull my ankle chain tighter. “Bathroom.”
I winced. “Well see…. It’s that time of the month. And I really need to use a bathroom. To clean up.”
Mike’s face paled, like he had seen a ghost. I knew all I needed to mention was my period or something of the sort and he’d fumble on his duties. It was clear womanly functions made him nervous, which made me wonder if he even had a mate.
He sighed loudly, clearly distraught. He wasn’t that much of a monster it seemed, since he stood up and made his way over to the door. Maybe he was compassionate and didn’t want to leave me sit in this state.
“Don’t try anything funny or I’ll let you sit in your own filth.” He said as he opened the cell and then bent down to grab my ankle. I rolled it once the cuff was off trying to get the blood flowing back to it. I waited as he walked around and unhooked whatever was digging into my back.
It felt so much better once I was free. Then he pulled my arm roughly, to stand beside him. Once the blood returned to my legs, he pushed me towards the door, watching me the whole time.
I kept my hands at my sides and followed him down a hallway that was in the other direction of the stairs and towards a tiny bathroom that sat in the corner. I turned on the light and shut the door. Before he could do anything I locked it.
I stood there staring at myself in the mirror. There were no windows in here, I couldn’t break out this way. I really wanted to avoid fighting, but it seemed like that was going to be the only way out. I sighed and went to the bathroom. I took my time peeing, stalling to give my legs time to wake up.
My mind kept trying to find a way out of here without hurting anyone. Why I wasn’t sure, after all they had kidn*pped me. They planned to break my bond with Lip. It shouldn’t matter if I hurt them trying to find my way back to him.
But for some reason, despite my years of training, I really didn’t want to hurt Mike.
Finally I flushed the toilet and washed my hands. Then I bent down and grabbed the dagger out of my boot and shoved it blade side up into my sleeve. Once I was situated I opened the door.
“Thank you.” I tried to sound grateful but Mike kept staring at me, waiting for me to attack. He grunted and then started walking back to the little cell. I followed him, not letting him notice that anything was different.
Once we got to the cell I realized this was my chance. His back was towards me as he opened the door and stepped in first. I knew it was now or never, so I made my move. I used my entire body to kick Mike inside, then pushed the door closed and locked it behind him.
Then I ran like hell up the stairs and pushed open the door. I all but fell into… a very nice brightly lit kitchen.
The house was clean and sparkling. It was empty but I could hear voices. I closed the door quietly behind me, putting a chair under the knob so it wouldn’t turn. Then I looked for a way out.
Across the kitchen there was a door that lead outside. I had no idea where the voices were coming from but I crept slowly across the tiles of the kitchen. I was almost there when someone threw themselves against the basement door.
Shit he must have gotten out. The voices stopped as he rammed against the wooden door again, shaking the chair. I didn’t care to wait and see what might happen next. I grabbed the handle to the back door, swung it open, and ran towards freedom.
It was dark outside, I had no idea where I was going, but I ran as fast as I could away from the house. I darted towards the trees, wishing I had my phone or any way to get a hold of Lip. I also wished for better eyesight because it was so much darker among the trees.
My feet got caught a few times in tree roots. I stumbled over a fallen tree branches and almost lost my footing when my ankle banged hard against a log in my path. But I kept going, putting distance between me and alpha Andrew.
I wouldn’t let him take Lip away from me.
I heard someone call my name as I made my way deeper into the trees. I had to be close to the border which meant I was close to Lip’s land. Our land now.
“I’m here!” I yelled hoping it wasn’t anyone from Andrew’s pack. I saw Jack in the distance, his eyes wide when he saw me. I smiled, feeling relieved to see a familiar face.
“Jack.” I said his name and I knew with his wolf ears he could hear me.
I took a step towards him, but it was too late. A shot rang out and suddenly a bullet hit me in the shoulder. The world tilted, my mind filled with static. All at once nothing else seemed to exist except the pain inside my shoulder.
I struggled in a breath of cold air, my lungs burned. I moved my injured arm, tears filling my eyes as another bullet buzzed past me. I kept moving towards Jack, my body threatening to give up. More pain shot through me as I realized it wasn’t a normal bullet, it was silver.
It burned, worse than the poison from Jack’s nails. Worse than any other wound I had gotten during a fight with a wolf or Hunter before.
It didn’t hurt nearly as much as my heart did as I realized I’d never get to say goodbye to Lip.
Blood slowly dropped down my back, a trail soaking into the sleeve of my shirt. The more I pushed myself to make it to Jack, the more my body tried to give up. Every step forward felt like the bullet pushed deeper inside my body.
I stumbled, my chest felt hollow. My lungs weren’t working, my throat burned from the cold air. I just didn’t want Jack, I wanted his alpha. Tears filled my eyes as my legs went numb.
My eyes went wide as the woods started to spin, Jack’s yell was lost to the wind. I couldn’t make it, my body started shutting down from the blood loss. I stopped in the middle of the trees and fell to my knees, Jack running to catch me as the darkness claimed me.
