“I’m sure they are already looking for me at the party.’’ He checked his watch and gasped. “We’ve been gone for an hour” He said.
“Are you worried?’’ I wanted to know if he regretted spending time with me.
“No, never. This past hour has been the best of my life.I was only saying that because my P.A called me.’’ He replied me almost immediately with no hint of regret.
“How do we leave without being seen?’’ I started wearing my dress because he had stood up and began wearing his too.
“We don’t have to hide.’’ He said as he wore his wristwatch and kissed me on my forehead.
“I know we don’t have to hide but your family can’t see me with you. It would make my life difficult and you know I can’t deal with that.’’
“Alright then. What do you suggest?’’ He asked me while checking his wristwatch. It was like the later we left hiding in the bushes the more trouble would meet us where we were.
I moved close to him and used my hands to gently stroke his hair. “Let’s levae here together and then when we get tp the hall, we go our separate ways.’’
“No, that would be too obvious. Why don’t we pass the back of the hall?’’
“Alright, I don’t like hiding though.’’ I said with some sort of sadness in my eyes. It was the kind that made me feel some sort of heaviness in my throat.
“I know my love, just be patient with me. I’ll make this right, trust me.’’
“Alright, I trust you.’’ He embraced me and then let me go after a short while.
We left the garden and began to make our way to the back entrance of the hall. We tiptoed all the way and Mark kept looking for watchful eyes at intervals. It would be a disaster if we were caught.
I wasn’t ready to see my face plastered everywhere across social media the next day. When we got to the back entrance, there was a large rod placed across it to prevent intruders. The rod wasn’t difficult to move.
But because of its weight, moving it would make a lot of noise and it alert the security guards. I was already sweating at all my pulse points. It was that kind of anxiety you got when you were in trouble or about to get in trouble.
Mark noticed that I was uneasy so he patted me on tha back and told me to move backwards. When I saw him move close to the door, I knew he was going to push the rod. Immediately, worst case scenarios filled my mind.
What if he pushed the rod and the security men came rushing in? If the guards raised an alarm and Mark managed to shush him, what if he told the tabloids?
I immediately started praying. God if you could just get me out of this mess, I promise never to sleep with another woman’s finacee again. I could hear my mind mock me, because even I knew that I was only praying because I was about to be exposed.
Deep within me, I knew that I wasn't quite yet ready to leave Mark alone.
“Are you ready?’’ He put his hand on the rod and looked at me.
“Yes,’’ I replied gently with a hint of uncertainty. My heart began to beat faster with every clincking of the rod.
Thankfully, he got the rod out of the latches without alarming anybody. But when he pulled back, the door behind him opened.
And just like that cameras kept flashing everywhere. I didn’t believe what was happening. Why was everyone at the back entrance of the hall?
Apparently, Mark’s mum had directed everyone to the back entrance of the hall to show them the garden outside the hall. It was a beautiful masterpiece.
Gasps rippled through the crowd as they saw us. Emily’s high pitched voice made matters worse .
“Mark! What is this?”
It was then the chaos erupted. Reporters were shouting questions, cameras kept clicking wildly, their voices lapping over one another. Emily took the opportunity to push past the crowd, her face twisted with rage.
“Her? Again? This stupid w***e?” she screamed, pointing at me as though I were filth. “In front of everyone? You’re a disgrace Mark”
Mark shielded me nad pulled me close. “Emily, enough.” He didn’t even care that Emily called him a disgrace.
Emily was about to cause a scene but his mother’s voice cut through the noise. It was very sharp and commanding. “Shut up everyone!’’
Everywhere went silent immediately.
Only the sound of Victoria’s heel walking towards me and Mark was heard. Even though I was behind Mark, I still felt like I wouldn’t escape Victoria’s wicked stares.
When she got to me and Mark, I couldn’t feel my legs anymore.
“Leave her alone mum. If you have anything to say, say it to me.’’ Mark said to his mum with determination all over his face.
“Mark, what does this cheap w***e have that’s making you humiliate this family?” His mum shook her head in utter disgust as she asked him those words.
Mark didn’t say anything because he didn’t want to give the tabloids anymore gossip than they already had. His mum waited for an answer for a while then she realized that he wasn’t going to say a word.
“I see that you don’t have anything to say?’’ She stared deep into Mark’s eyes, he stared back with the same amount of pressure.
She looked at him again and simply walked away from us. She was a few metres fom the door when she shouted.
“Security!” Drag that w***e off my property.
“Mark” I whimpered in fear as the cameras flashed repeatedly.
“Go with them Clara, there’s no need to make a scene.’’ He moved from in front of me and allowed the security men escort me out.
He didn’t fight for me. He didn’t offer to escort me out rather than let the filthy security men touch me.
My eyes kept staring at him in utter disbelief and shock as the security men escorted me out.
I was a long metres away from him, his mother and he guests but I was close enough to see Emily walk up to him.
One of the security men pressed my hand so hard, I looked away to tell him he was hurting me.
When my gaze returned to Mark’s direction, I saw him in a bent position with his hand on the right side of his face.
I knew instantly that Emily had slapped him.
